Thank you for posting this because Hoenn is the actual most overrated region. The left side of this image is full of unfun jobber garbage like Glalie and Aggron. Either bad stats or bad movesets. People love to shit on pre-split games but really it's only gen 3 that sucks ass because at least the elemental punches are available easily in gen 2. Put the Battle Frontier in any other region and I'd never play a Shartnn game ever again.

gen 4 is the most "sterile" region, that doesnt mean its bad but pretty much everything it does is something already done in gen 2 or 3, all it has going for it is the split. plus the johto wanking is especially annoying and the fact it basically just reuses rses plot

I hope you realize that like half of the gen 3 mons are weaker than NFEs. Like Plusle and Minun are legit just two of the worst Pokemon ever made, you could have put them against Shinx and Pikachu and they'd still be worse

I agree completely op. I liked the new pokemon designs when I first saw them and the only one I continued using is porygon z. The fog is unbearable. Lowering your accuracy in arceus is like nothing. In gen floor its a 20 minute xp bump thats well under worth it.

Wasn’t the Hoeen regional dex mostly Gen3 pokemon. If the Majority of pokemon are shitters then doesn’t it kind of balance out.

I also think it was the beginning of the decline in Pokemon designs with goofy mons like Bibarel and edge-mons like Darkrai and Lucario being the first examples of Pokemon that I straight-up don't want to train. On the plus side:

>Consistently the best art along with HGSS
>Feels like GF was still legitimately trying to make the best games they could
>Some of the most fully-featured games
Gen 4 is still leagues better than anything post-DS

Plusle and Minun don't accurately represent most of the dex. even if a pokemon is a SFMA, it can still be decent in the main game because after, most of the NPCs in pokemon use 2-3 NFEs with only level up moves anyways. it's not like the games are that hard

Hoenn has by far the weakest new Pokemon. I think it also has the lowest average BST of all the generations - even lower than the generation with all of the babies

BST alone is only a loose way to measure strength/viability but I think you are right. Of the first three generations Gen 2 has the highest BST, then Gen 1, then Gen 3. Gen 4 has like double the BST of them and the BST’s remain high after that

Sinnoh was unpopular for a long while. Gen 4 takes the least amount of risks in the franchise, it's arguably the most bland generation, and it's painfully slow. I still like Sinnoh but it's overrated.

Within the past few years, the people who were kids in 2006 and had DPPt as their first Pokemon games are now young adult zoom zooms who live on social media and gush nostalgically over Sinnoh. These are the same people who were banging pots and pans and doing social media campaigns to demand for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Now we're even starting to see new younger zoom zooms gush nostalgically over Kalos and they're demanding Kalos DLC and the return of Megas. It's truly a cycle.

Not to this level though. Some people regard it as the best Pokemon game, which would've been a take laughed at for a long time. I like Platinum and I think it saved Sinnoh from total mediocrity, but even with the pacing and gameplay improvements, it's still a slow game and a bland region.

And Megas were also super divisive at the time they came out. A lot of people weren't upset with Megas being removed so much as people were upset with general features and pokemon being removed. People are definitely growing nostalgic for Kalos though.

Kalos is okay. I honestly think it's a lot like Sinnoh, flawed but it had potential. Kalos really would've benefited from a third game. Also like Sinnoh, it's bland as all hell though.

I don't think there's truly a "bad" Pokemon game besides BDSP and some of the spinoffs like Battle Revolution, but DP and XY are the most mediocre games in the franchise.

I've been using this board since XY and Platinum was topping tier lists even back then, I'd venture to guess because of the Battle Frontier. Can't speak for sites like Twitter or Reddit though

I'm 30, I was on 4chan in 2007 before Platinum came out. It was not as popular as you make it sound, and it quickly got overshadowed by HGSS which was immediately popular. DP still had the Battle Zone for post-game, but Pokemon games weren't really judged the same way for post-game and stuff until XY, when postgame started to get cut. FWIW postgame is great to have but it can be an overrated aspect, and what constitutes a "postgame" in the community is way too narrow.

I think Unova is truly the region that had the biggest genuine turnaround in perception but that's mostly because it was criticized for the wrong reasons at the time. It took a bunch of risks with the formula instead of playing it safe like Sinnoh did. Most of the criticisms for Sinnoh at the time still stick though.

yeah they really didn't start to actually utilize the DS until Unova, HGSS is pretty much carried by being a mechanical update to the greatest games in the series though.

again, this is the main campaign we're talking about. almost all the mons you listed are perfectly usable in a normal playthrough. Shedinja would literally be impossible for certain NPCs to beat because of Wonder Guard.

It is not uncommon for people to use route 1 bird Pokemon at all regardless of region. In fact, the fact that you used these as points at all when every region has these is fucking dumb. Pokemon like Mighyena and Masquerain get Intimidate so they still have a niche over other pokemon that learn some of the same moves as them

not having STAB isn't always the worst thing. Aggron, being a Rock Types with no Rock STAB above 60BP, gets plenty of good physical attacks, like Earthquake and Brick Break. Sharpedo and Crawdaunt can still use Special Attack. 90 and 95 aren't bad. It's not like you'll be putting anything other than attacks on them anyways so you could still fit some physical moves on them if you wanted to
