The Pokemon cycle is a myth. It only truly applies to Gens 3 and 5. 3 because that is when normies checked out of the franchise, and 5 because it was a late DS game.

The only thing I'll say about wanting more of these was that they're the only ones that felt like they could have done with a plot expanding third one; like all that stuff with Zygarde could have been so much better here than being stuff into SM

That isn't true at all. We just always got 3rd versions to expand on them. And such was not the case here.
