So assuming I'm a complete newfag to this franchise, what would be considered the best Pokemon game? I want to play the crop of the top then fuck off. Which one should I pick?

Play Red, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, Black or White then its sequel, Y, Ultra Sun, and stop. The remakes are neat but if you want the crop you don't need any of them. The Switch games are trash. Only variable here is maybe Yellow after Red, but don't play it solo because it's got the hardest-to-use starter.

except for Arceus, the new ones are bad but at least they have better graphics, QoL, online etc. You can play SV which is the newest one. And maybe XY, USUM and SwSh if you wanna try out Kalos, Alola, Galar

Play gen 1, gen 2, then PLA, then stop. At that point you've already effectively played every game in the series that matters and every other game is just a shitty reskin.

Honestly we should stop using the "new/old" system and use the "3D/2.5D/2D" system.

And yes, the 3D games are mostly shit with a couple of gems mixed in.

Well I like the story, and the designs. While the region design leaves some lacking, it's at least attempting to be unique for the time, which is nice, and does replicate what New York state feels like for the most part. The only exception is the desert. There aren't deserts in New York, as far as I know.
The battle train system was fucking awesome, I wish they'd bring that back.

Which game is best depends on your personal taste, the hest way to leanr that taste is to play BW, BW2, then HGSS or Platinum, and XY or ORAS.
After those 4 games, If you enjoy BW2 and XY/ORAS more, play more gen 6+ games, if you enjoy BW and Plat/HGSS more, play more gen 1-4 games.

Starting with Emerald is pointless when ORAS exist. A new player isn't going to grind for the Battle Frontier, and the more recent changes would let them get in easier instead of starting without the split and other differences just to play 3 games with them.

Gen 1 is skippable
Gen 2 is arguably skippable, but if you want to play it, play Crystal.
Gen 3 is good, play FR or LG for the definitive Kanto experience, and play Emerald for Hoenn.
Gen 4 is mostly bad, carried by Platinum. HG or SS is the definitive Johto experience.
Gen 5 is pretty good, but be sure to play Black or White first, and then play their respective sequel next (B2 for Black, W2 for White)
Gen 6 is bad. Play X or Y, and then OR/AS if you skipped Emerald for the other Hoenn experience.
Gen 7 holds you hand. Don't bother with vanilla Sun/Moon, just play US/UM instead.
Gen 8 is carried by PLA so play that, only bother with Sw/Sh if you want you hand held even more.
Gen 9 exists.
Best games overall are Emerald, HG/SS, and Gen 5 as a whole.

Gen 6 is absolutely NOT "Gen 5 but anything". Gen 5 had a region that's completely linear for the first half and then opens up after you beat the league; Gen 6 has a region that loops around itself a couple times and only adds a couple new places to go after you beat the league.
Gen 5 only had Pokemon from its own generation before you beat the league, the largest roster of any generation. Gen 6 had the smallest roster of any generation and instead celebrated all of its predecessors.
Gen 5 had an enemy team that raised interesting moral questions that were completely tossed aside in the second half for a traditional good vs. evil affair. Gen 6 had an enemy team that raises no moral questions and introduces odd concepts in the back half like the immortal king.
You can say either one is better. I don't care what you like. But saying that Gen 6 is "Gen 5 but X" is nonsense. They're on the opposite ends of the Pokemon spectrum.

Breeding and trading pokémon is way more immoral than battles yet it was never brought up (if I remember correctly). And the only characters who implied battles are bad either had an evil agenda or were idiots who fell for the scam (N being one these).

I don't care about anything else being discussed, I just want to point out that people love to jerk off the concept of BW's story despite the execution being awful.

how is this relevant for anyone who hasn’t played the series before? If OP plays gen 6 it effectively has 450 new Pokemon before you beat the league, not 150. Which makes it better than gen 5.

I like the newest games the most, violet and arceus and lets go are my favourites. I have played all of them but the old ones feel incredibly tedious and limiting compared to the new ones.

Any of the first four games is fine, with platinum being the best (though diamond and pearl are decent alternatives). Pokemon is fundamentally a puzzle game; the battling mechanic is a gimmick because of how bad the AIs are (I sweeped the elite four & champion with two to four pokemon all 10-20 levels below their pokemon in all generations); and the collecting mechanic is a scam to get you to buy more copies of the game. You can't even collect them all even if you have two consoles and the games, because of bullshit "mythical" pokemon and pokemon just not available in that generation

The real answer to this, and the one /vp/ won't admit, is that there really isn't any such thing as a "best Pokemon game" - most Pokemon games are actually extremely similar in terms of quality, probably owing to the fact all of them have more or less the exact same structure. If you just want the best Pokemon game, whichever one you play first will be that.
