A living sandstorm would make sense as a Ground/Flying type (sort of, because Gamefreak seems to think Ground is Sand despite Sandstorm being Rock-type)

Gliscor should be Bug/Flying and Landorus Grass/Flying.

Flying - Capable of flight or manipulating wind or air
Gligar line manipulates sand. Landorus manipulates earth in general.

In Pokemon, Ground can be creatures that burrow (Diglett), have earth powers/control (Ursaluna, Groudon) or things relating to sand (Sandile, Hippowdon) or clay (Runerigus, though I'm with the majority who think it should've been Ghost/Rock).

Rock are creatures composed of rock (Nacli), Roggenrola, have rock/mineral adornments (H Growlithe, Rockruff), fossils, crystals (Diancie).

All in all a relatively arbitrary distinction that admittedly can cross lines sometimes, with shit like Runerigus, Sandstorm, etc.

Depends on how you look at it I guess. In ancient times you could have winged harvest/fertility deities, and earthquake-causing deities didn't necessarily need to be literal mud/sand elementals (that's relatively modern). It's just a creature with earth powers that also happens to fly or have wind powers.

The problem imo isn't as much the concept making no sense but rather pokemon types being very poorly defined or too broad for their own good. Flying is simultaneously birds (or any flying animal that isn't already dual type) and wind. Ground is sometimes clay, sometimes fertile soil, sometimes farm-related stuff like plowing, sometimes animals that burrow/live underground, sometimes sand itself (except when sand is rocks), sometimes it's mud, sometimes it's gods of fertility or the ecosystem.
