The fallout was legendary.

XY did an amazing job of convincing the audience that Ash was cooler and better than ever. He had a cool team, a gf, some sick sakuga battles, and his donut steel Greninja. Even internet personalities kept hyping this up as the best season of the show. They had all the momentum. So when reality finally came around it hit that much harder.

I think the hype was the main contributor to the negative response. I know multiple people who didn't watch the anime but tuned in for those last few episodes because everyone was convinced Ash was about to get his big win.
If you've been watching since the start and Ash loses another championship then it's just whatever, add it to the pile. If you only watched because you thought Ash would win, though, then the sudden loss would seem a lot worse.

The question you have to ask yourself is why people got so mad in this case in specific when in all the previous times they did not. Why was this one time so special?
It's really piss-easy to say "of course he'd lose he always loses the leagues" because hindsight in 20/20.
If you weren't there, if you weren't following the XY anime, then you will never get it.It was one of those you had to be have been there type of things.

I'm amazed people forget how controversial this was. Hell, the official Japanese YouTube channel removed likes and dislikes and disabled comments specifically because the videos related to this episode got dislike-bombed.

Also as others have mentioned there was a lot of hype before this episode. Hell even the Japanese title baited people in (I checked and the title for previous leagues' final episodes were usually along the lines of 'X League conclusion' or 'Last battle').

Additionally, as >>53119933 said, it's hard not to argue that Ash winning the Alola League (granted, it was a joke league) and eventually the PWC as a direct reaction to fan outrage about the Kalos League.

Yes , there never been such blunt display of favoritism. The original writers didn't favor Ash but they also made sure everybody else goes though the same treatment as Ash to keep it fair until Alain happened.

More like they wanted to avoid Alain losing to Ash despite pressure to it. Since there is nothing embarrassing losing to the former undefeated World Champion ONCE. The anime purposefully made Ash's battle on Master Tournament controversial to make Alain look stronger.

The seethe was well warranted. But in a way I'm grateful because they've been desperately trying to apologize ever since. The Kalos loss is why Ash became champion in Alola and eventually World Champion in Journeys. They also had Alain get crushed by Leon, but that was just going too far.

Besides Unova placing Ash in the top 8 because it was a shit season, Ash always did better or the same as the previous series

For SM it was either runner-up or winner, it was the natural progression, it had nothing to do with XY

In fact there were only 63 other qualified trainers at both the Lily of the Valley Conference and Lumoise Conference so neither of those were nearly as impressive as his Hoenn league performance.
