I think they were dropped after gen 7 because as the anon above said they have moved to generational gimmicks that are available to all pokemon rather than a select few, so gen 6-7 Megas are unfair by design.
Also it's possible we get gen 5 remakes in this generation (and it's actually plausible given the strong parallels between the box legendaries of gen 5 and 9, plus it's the perfect opportunity for a paradox Tao Trio Original Dragon) and XY remakes in gen 10.
If gen 10 introduces a gimmick that is reminiscent of Mega evolution then it's almost guaranteed.
