Well, there was a lot of shitstorm lately with Winnie (partially) becoming public domain so anybody can produce merch if it's not involving yellow fucked in red shirt.
Meanwhile Pokemon had very rough years, with dozens of issues making certain groups of fans disappointed and entire competitive scene imploding due to Corona.
There's also other way to look at it - Winnie is not the only big franchise (partially or entirely) controlled by Disney and if you sum it up they completely overpower TPC and virtually everything.

They matter a lot. Especially surprisingly VGC events - the competitive scene is not worth that much on its own but massive gathering of pokemon-addicted retards ready to throw money at merch was. For 2-3 years that was stunted and limited.

Looking at it through that lens sure, but the way it was initially worded implies competitive itself was somehow an actual major contributor to Pokemon's revenue
