The problem is that the gimmick isn't communicated in the design. The name ("friend" + "flamingo") and idea are that the Flamigos fight in unison as a coordinated group, but since you only have one of them as a Pokemon, it ends up just looking like... a flamingo.

Imagine Maushold or Falinks if you only had one of 'em.
