I always thought it was just a cool idea, like they had the concept to have a whole region of entirely new mons but with a more familiar "archetype" as a fun basis

3 stagers just give the feeling of a "complete" or "premier" line if it makes sense. Especially if they are used by a regional specialist (gym or E4)

These ones bother me as they're blatant rip offs retreading the same thing and do almost nothing different, the rest are fine and add something new at least slightly

So many of these are insane reaches. Out of this whole list I'd say only Foongus and Amoogus try to do the Kantooo thing over since they're both Pokeball mimics. Other stuff like Swoobat or Swanna or fucking Scolipede have no place on this list since their worst offense is either being based off the same animal or having the same typing as something from Kantooo.

I don't blame people for being turned off by newer Pokemon designs but to say they've run out ideas us a stretch imo. Unova dex shows that its lossible to make appealing ones even if they are remixed versions of ones from previous gens. Here's an example that isn't from Unova and Kanto.

Most of them are reaches ("Th- th centipede is a bee rip-off!!!!". "That swan looks too much like a kappa!"). Some of the ones that aren't still manage to be stupid by ignoring the fact that the natural world has a lot of similar-looking creatures. (S)woobat represent a different kind of bat than the Kanto ones and have a distinct aesthetic. Garbodor is litter instead of toxic sludge. The image isn't totally wrong either - Bouffalant is the worst offender, Gigalith's concept doesn't stand out enough from Golem's for the aesthetic change to matter. Same with Sawk and Throh. But overall it's one reach after another. The image was made by a hater, not someone offering up useful criticism.

they already lack spiky shield and rough skin/iron barbs abilities despite kantooooo favoritism and literally having spikes as a core design element

Yeah exactly. They're the first true convergent evolutions when it came to ecological niche or competitive niche or both. Frankly I had hoped gen 9 was going the same route but maybe 10 will be our next major reboot

the minccino line was designed to be the equivilant to clefairy so you can technically add that if you want even though it doesnt show much in the design and was retconned in gen 6 by clefairy becoming fairy type

Am I the only autist who realizes that Dwebble and Crustle are Paras and Parasect? Little nymph crab bug getting consumed, one by a mushroom the other by rocks. Krabby got remade a gen later alongside Horsea in the form of Skrelp and Clawncher, where they swapped colors.

Most of these are just good examples of how you can do the same concept in different and interesting ways. Threre are some uninteresting examples like Bouffalant that doesn't add anything interesting neither design-wise or with the typing or playstle, but then we have Amoonguss, Jellicent, Manibuzz etc that are similiar yet clearly distinct in a lot of ways.

Unova came too early in a way.
If it introduced the concept of regional variations, instead of just replicating a lot of the same tropes of Gen 1 with 'totally distinct' monsters, it probably would have been received better.
Where it does iterate on the same concepts, its often better. Gigalith is a lot better than Golem. Scolipede is one of the few early route Bug types that is genuinely good. Chandelure is a great design.
But so clearly copying Gen 1 for its roster despite being a 'fresh start for the series' just felt like wasted potential.

Why would it bother anyone? Even if they just used the Kanto dex as a blueprint, the Pokemon themselves are still all unique.

Every generation has Pokemon that fit some sort of archetype; there' always going to be some cats or some ghosts or some bugs, lmao. I think people also forget that Unova was the first (and so far only) game since the original to have a completely unique regional dex, so using Gen 1 as a sort of guideline was kind of neat.

Personally I don't agree with the Butterfree, Beedrill and Dragonite ones since every region has early game bugs and a psuedo.

I think the most interesting though is Crustle and Amoonguss cause they both are in ways an interpretation of the Parasect line but then also the Kingler and Electrode lines as well, would've been kinda neat I think if other Gen V Pokemon had that aspect to their basis.
