Chi-Yu doesn't hit all that much harder than Chien-Pao. There are more relevant physical walls, but there are also fewer Pokemon that can outspeed it.

Why are you using Flutter Mane for speed control when it should be firing off nukes? Protect and STAB are basically mandatory, and you can choose between Tera Fire or Mystical Fire.

New to competitive, been doing some VGC singles. Picrel is my current team. Val and Drag are mixed sets, Corv is running a Body Press/Roost set. Maus is Maus. Been pretty successful so far, but I want input.

On the fence.
On one hand, it keeps a lot of equally broken shit in check, notably Dragapult and Gholdengo.
On the other hand, it's a wallbreaker, revenge killer and sweeper all rolled into one and has STAB on two of the absolute best offensive types.
In many ways it's worse than Chi-Yu, who could perform 1 or 2 of those roles depending on the set. 135 speed is utterly ridiculous, 100 is a lot more manageable. Plus it has priority on both of its STABs.

Ice and dark are types you want to resist regardless given how powerful they are.
The real issue is being faster than everything and the one mon that outspeeds it (Dragapult) is weak to both its priority moves.

Tera Fire Tera Blast hits noticeably harder, especially on relevant meta threats that have opted for Tera Steel. Aside from the Tera Steel matchup, Tera Fairy is arguably better due to resisting Sucker Punch and the raw damage output you'd get from the same type Tera bonus. You'd still want Mystical Fire in that case for the plethora of Steel Tera.

Dark is actually not that great of an attacking type, especially now that most Dark types lost Knock Off. That one move is basically the only relevant Dark type attack as far as raw damage is concerned. Pursuit is 40 bp (and gone) and Sucker Punch is 70 bp

Never was, never will be. It's thoroughly mediocre in every regard. H-Typhlosion might be pretty okay because of its signature move, but the -5 speed and -5 hp really hurt it. 95 is notably slower than 100 and reduces the amount of Pokemon it can get a jump on significantly. Making it squishier and slower in exchange for a better signature move is just head scratching.

Not much harder than Mystical Fire after Flutter has already tera'd
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Fire Flutter Mane Mystical Fire vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tera Steel Roaring Moon: 194-230 (107.7 - 127.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

It's nearly useless to have two Fire moves in your moveset of similar power, one of which is conditional, and logic dictates to get rid of the conditional move that doesn't have a useful side effect.
You should never use Tera Blast unless absolutely necessary, and it's not for Tera Fire Flutter Mane.

Lowering an opponent's special attack is almost never worth it in this case. The extra firepower is certainly more valuable than lowering Roaring Moon's or Kingambit's Special Attack. Especially on a Pokemon with 55 defence and 135 special defence.

The same reason people used Regieleki for speed control. Having your speed control Pokemon not be a dead slot after it sets up is key. How often do you see a situation where Whimsicott or Mimiyu sets up TW or TR and then is just stuck on the field doing chip damage? Flutter Mane hits like an absolute truck, so being able to Icy Wind turn one, then just Moonblast or Shadow Ball something turn two is huge.

First time playing in a long time, gargancl is aids, terra mind games don't really seem to matter as much as getting the power boost. Sidenote does anyone else dislike the sample teams on ps. They get the job done but sort of have a lot of holes that get exposed as you play.

Yup. Tiers are created every usage update now until they hit PU, which we will get in March. All new Pokemon start in OU before dropping down each usage-based tier update. That means every time Game Freak releases a shitmon in a raid, they'll take like 4 or 5 months to reach the tier they belong.

Barraskewda is a solid Pokemon even without Pelipper around. It is ungodly fast and it still hits decently hard with a Choice Band. It's not pulling off the KOs it could with Pelipper around when it's on its own, but there isn't a single unboosted Pokemon faster than it in UU or RU and it functions as a solid late game cleaner.

OK but the extra power is pretty marginal and almost never comes into play especially if sun is out. I've posted a calc that shows Tera Steel Roaring Moon still dies from Tera Mystical Fire. You're the first person I've seen suggesting that Tera Blast + legit coverage of the same type is viable and not a waste of moveslots which are precious even on the biggest one trick pony (and I don't agree Flutter Mane is one).

I'm running Klefki on my Series 2 team to set rain because Pelipper gets completely fucking annihilated by Iron Bundle and that's still an understatement. Thoughts?
I'm sure there's probably a better Rain Setter I could bring but I think Klefki is pretty good. I'm running Dual Screens/Rain Dance/Metal Sound with Mental Herb. If not Klefki I'm thinking maybe Friend Guard Maushold.

Me. It's a blanket check for Garganacl and Dondozo, two insanely powerful and popular threats currently, as well as a counter to Scrotom-Wash. It has 1 more base speed than Greninja and resists both of Greninja's STABs making it a good, but shaky due to Ice Beam, check to the gay frog.

Flower Trick also lets it blow up Tera Skeledirge, and its Grass typing gives it Spore immunity. Being a Dark type lets it switch into Grimmsnarl's Prankster Thunder Wave for free, and it can run Trick to cripple Corv, Ting-Lu, Pex, Clod, Dozo, and Espathra.

Overqwil was pretty highly rated as a potential threat pre-SV because Dark+Poison with access to entry hazards and Intimidate looked nice, but then SV cane out, Great Tusk took over the meta, and speculative Overqwil stock tanked overnight. I think it'll carve out a really solid place in RU by the end of the generation. Qwilfish itself always finds a niche and this is Qwilfish but better, and its pre-evo will also find a solid niche

In fact I don't think it'd be controversial to say that all the Hisuan Pokemon outside of Avalugg-H will find some strong niche in a tier.

So let's talk about Espathra.
The bitch will go out of control with Pao gone, forcing every team to carry multiple strong priority users (she usually has HP and DEF EVs).
Stored Power is a broken move and always was, it should be nerfed to 60 BP and +10 for each stat boost or something like that.
There is also the Specs set with Lumina Crash which is another busted move in its own right and the less Dark types in the tier the more spammable it is.
So I guess she'll be the next suspect, before Garganacl (whom will probably never be suspected due to Smogon's bias towards stall) because she murders their precious Pex and stall as a whole.

It's an ever present threat. You can easily lose to Maushold if you don't have a Ghost/Steel/Rock type or a Pokemon with Rocky Helmet. You have to keep your check constantly healthy if you see they have a Maushold in the back.

In usual scenarios, you assume that opponents don't stick around, so Stone Edge/Arm Hammer does more damage to whatever the opponent has to deal with a Garganacl
Also, my Garg's role is against Breloom and Mimikyu. Water and steel are better left to others.

It's always been one of the strongest types in the game only held back by sub-par Pokemon (much like Gen 6 Fairy). Removing Steel's resistance to Ghost and Pursuit was a mistake.

Also, Gen 6, 7, and 8 had absurd Ghost types, too. Blacephalon, Aegislash, Dragapult, Spectrier, Marshadow, Mimikyu, and Mega Gengar were all busted.

Why is nobody using Slither Wing in VGC? I've been using a min-speed bulky Slither Wing with Bulk Up/Morning Sun/Leech Life (or First Impression depending on what I feel that day)/Close Combat with leftovers/clear amulet/rocky helmet (again, depends on what i feel like i need, it's still a team in progress since booster energy is on a roaring moon with acrobatics) and basically just use it as an even tankier annihilape with a massive boost to attack through sun. I've been considering dropping the morning sun/bulk up and trying out the AV set since it already has a fairly good amount of SpD and letting it be my Flutter Mane/Iron Bundle answer with maybe a Tera Steel or Electric and maybe something like Wild Charge to delete the little fucker.

I've yet to have to actually NEED to tera it a single time yet because I've yet to see a single Talonflame, Dragonite with a flying move or even a Roaring Moon - granted I haven't played THAT much because paradox mons bore me to death. It's all been pretty much every other combination of paradox mons. But currently it's tera fire, so the only real threats I've had are Bundle and Great Tusks and usually I've got something on the side that threatens any potential flying stuff anyway with a bundle of my own and/or Iron Thorns. Even if it's not a great mon, it sure does dissuade any flying fuckers.

I've been giving it Physical sets with Rock slide and Power whip because its nice to hit a quiver dancer pretty hard without fighting against their boosts, but in terms of raw power nothing beats the specs set, Tera Dragon that gooey blob and you have an Adaptability Draco Meteor in a tier with 0 relevant fairy types

This is a teambuilding guy from Pinkacross, prolific teambuilder with many successful and clever RMTs on smogon. This guide is from SS but general idea should still be the same.

1. Pick a core/pokemon.
This is the step where you decide what you want to build around. For this team, my initial core was Tapu Lele + Blacephalon.

2. Pick a playstyle.
Certain playstyles suit certain pokemon better. You don’t want to make an Alakazam stall, for instance. The team can branch out at this point, and several versions can be made. Maybe the core/pokemon you selected works on more than 1 playstyle.

3. Add supporting pokemon to the core/pokemon.
This is where you find partners that work well with the core. For this team, I knew that Slowbro would be a good partner for my Tapu Lele + Blacephalon core because it would help bring in Blacephalon safely, and let Lele break teams better.

4. Add hazards/ hazard removal.
You may have this implemented already, and if so, this step can be skipped. If not, this is a very important step as almost every team needs hazards and removal. Due to the presence of Heavy Duty Boots, some teams can skip out on hazards. It is almost never a good choice to skip out on removal. The more offensive your team is, the more flimsy your removal can be, of course depending on how weak your team is to hazards. Bulky teams need very solid hazard removal, like a Corviknight. A more offensive build may use a defogger like Scarf Kartana. If your team is bulky and weak to hazards, you need solid and consistent removal. If your team is offensive and good against hazards, you can afford flimsy removal or even no removal at all

5. Patch up holes.
At this stage you likely won’t have too many slots left. See what pokemon you lose to, and add something that fixes the issue. Remember that this choice should not only fix a problem, but also add to the functionality of a team. For example, if you lack a Nidoking check, and you’re running an HO build, Hydreigon would likely be a much better choice than Blissey, even though they both fix the problem.

Building can be very difficult, especially when using creative pokemon. My advice is this: Make teams that are great against most things, rather than good against everything. You can’t cover every playstyle, or every set, or every team. If you try, you’ll end up making mediocre teams that don’t win, but rather focus on not losing. It’s better to win 9/10 matchups and get destroyed in the one loss than to have a mediocre team that wins 6/10 matchups. If you only remember one thing from this whole guide, remember this: Teams that just “don’t lose” to anything often don’t beat anything either.

6. Test.
Test multiple versions, or one version, but testing is vital. Even after years of building I can’t tell if what looks good on paper will be good in practice, and vice versa.

7. Repeat steps.
This is an iterative process, and you may have to redo these steps many times until you get the team you want. That being said, you may have a dead end building project that just isn’t worth it. Vibrava will never work in OU. At times like this, choose a new project.

I'm in the top 10 on the ladder so I think I can speak about it: the main issue with the format is hazards.
If your opponent has webs or a good spiker like Klefki and you have no Defog/Spin, you will lose most of the time. Magic Bounce isn't great since Hatterene is stuck with shitty TR or Specs sets instead of running Nuzzle and Espeon is just too frail.
Toxic Spikes is unreliable without Team preview since you might just waste turns if the opponent has a poison type. SR is dumb as always but by itself is manageable because SR-weak mons usually have HDB.
It doesn't help that choice items are extremely common in the format, you can end up with a team with 3 or 4 users so you'll be forced to switch out a lot.

Personally I would change the team generation algorithm to ensure if you have more than just SR then the opponent must have at least a spinner or defogger.

If a regional form evolves from the standard form (so the starters, Braviary, Sliggoo and Avalugg for PLA) you aren't going to be able to breed them and you will need to transfer them from PLA every time you need a new one. That might also apply to the regular evolutions such as Ursaluna assuming they do not patch a evolution method on release (currently Ursaring can use Eviolite and is programmed to evolve into Ursaluna but with a dummy evolution method that does not work).

Just picked up the vgc team from James Baek's video yesterday with the Acid Spray Iron Moth. I have experience fighting Dondozo/Tatsu but not piloting them. I just unga bunga EQed his Torkoal, tanked 2 Moonblasts from a Flutter Mane who then killed itself to life orb, and outsped a non boosted Roaring Moon to chesto rest. This is retarded and I'm not even playing them smart yet.

this is why series 1 was such a fucking boring series because it was all just dondozo+tatsugiri with gholdengo/annihilape/hydreigon/murkrow/garchomp/dragonite on the side with very few variations unless you had a specific plan like a rain team or a trick room team. series 2 is turning out to be even worse with the same problems, now amplified with these fucking grotesque offensive monsters on top of that

they had a resurgence in the latter half of the series, but a lot of people didn't run it anymore because of how common murkrow was. didn't make them that much less common, in top 800 i was literally facing a dongiri team literally every 2 to 3 matches from different people. even if people made teams that weren't 100% based around dondozo + tatsugiri, many people still brought it just because it forced their opponent to bring certain things to hold in the back for haze/clear smog and that is just as powerful as not bringing it. if you can bring basically whatever the fuck you want, and you can effectively force your opponent to lose 1 slot to be forced to bring a hazer/smogger, you've already got the advantage, especially in a best-of-one format.

Unfortunately people prefer NOT to pass their opponents free boons if they can help it. Whatever team you're building is not gonna enjoy facing down an AssVest Great Tusk with a recoil-less Life Orb boost or a non-locked Choice Scarf Flutter Mane who can still take a free hit with a Sash, no matter what mons are on it.

H.from is an upgrade in most regards. Fire/Ghost STAB, 119 spA, and Calm Mind are huge. Being knocked out of the100 speed club is a bit disappointing but there really isn’t anything between 95-100 anyway.
What’s funny is you can tell the SV team was salty that the Legends team picked Typhlosion as the Fire Legend starter over CHARIZARD because they went out of their way to nerf it, No new special moves when every other starter got many new options, other legends starter sig moves were heavily buffed will Infernal Parade got no improvement, its Ability was even changed to Frisk as soon as the rules were changed to be open meta. but the Legends team managed to gave it just enough that it wouldn't be a shitmon.

NTA but from my experience, anything with quiver dance can snow ball out of control thanks to Tera being a potential get out is jail free card for things that prevent it from setting up. Also Revelation Dance is essentially a stronger Tera Blast.

It's very centralized around hazard control, like OU, but Mega Diancie is a lot better than Hatterene as a Glimmora check.
Z-Crystal and Mega usage has also dropped compared to Gen 8 and Gen 7, specifically because hazards are so strong.

the entire natdex tier basically revolves around checking these 2. you need to answer both while also running your own hazard setter
Gen 8 also gave Swampert Flip Turn, meaning Pelipper/Mega Swampert are the best weather duo by far, Swampert resisting Pelipper's weaknesses and both having pivot moves
if you fucking hate Clefable I have great news because Clefable is ass and isn't used anymore, lowest usge since Gen 5 before it became a Fairy

Also the game should have distributed cleric tech like the did defog in gen 7. Toxic is fine, it makes most pokemon better. It also makes pokemon that can run heal bell or aromatherapy even better. You clearly can't play pokemon. Like the rise of cleric Dragonite last gen proves that this game is more interesting than you can imagine.
