How can anyone defend gen 1 even with nostalgia? It was basically a test game that they sold to the stupid populace.

I love gen 1 because it's glitchy and goofy and retro
cope boomers, it's a fun game and that's all that matters, being able to use special attacker chansey and double team confuse ray golbat is fun, the graphics are funny and soulful and I like how modern the Kanto region is

Scarlet and Violet are my favorite games and I had a blast playing them, the literal only bad thing about them is the performance, everything else is perfect

though I did play them without being spoiled, so every new pokemon I encountered was a hit of dopamine in my brain so that made the game really really really fun

Kid, I know it's hard for you to wrap your head around, so let me explain in terms you might understand.
The original Pokemon games were passion projects made by a few indie developers, kinda like Undertale or FNAF.

no it wasnt. you must be too young to remember, but devs hiding WIP assets, scrap code, unused pieces of the game or whatever just off screen or in some place the player cant normally get to was an extremely common practice back then, it wasnt just pokemon, it was virtually every game.

pokemon actually ran very well and had very few noticeable bugs during a typical playthough. it only started to fall apart when you went out of your way to make it to so with some really janky and non obvious interactions

Also, glitching the game to get special Pokémons or trading Missingno was really memorable and those goofy sprites were fun.
Gen 1 is archaic but was never a bad game.

As a boomer who played Gen 1 in 1999, SwSh felt as much as a test game as Gen 1 but way less fun and with way less soul.
SV was good though.

I defend it because it was the most close to artists' vision and unsanitized version of all before the franchise took off and they turned everything into yens milking machine. I love the grotesque poses and eerie vibe, the game back then didn't feel like kids playground with all happy people. It was abstraction of world that left many stuff unexplained for player to imagine, the feel of mystery and curiosity amped up with all urban legends. Experience not replicable today.

I replayed gen 1 and 2 games on 3DS during the lockdown a few years ago, and I can say that, despite having a lot of nostalgia for gen 1 from playing it a ton when it came out it, it hasn't aged well. It's not terrible, but compared to later games it's at times extremely clunky. I originally wanted to catch every pokemon you could without trading, but ended up giving up when I would've had to grind coins for Porygon and catch all the Safari Zone exclusives.
One the other hand, I really liked Crystal, despite having far less nostalgia for gen 2 (for me it kind of fell between gens 1 and 3, which I played a lot more as a kid), and actually did get every pokemon I could in that versions (which IIRC is something like 230 out of 251).

The badge boost glitch and bugged type effectiveness texts (where the game says attacks are super effective if they're
so against the pokemon's first type even the second type resist it) literally can't be avoided, and the odds are very high that either an NPC or you (if you didn't know it was bugged) used focus energy at some point or encountered the "gen 1 miss". Now, a lot of that is stuff you probably didn't pay attention to or know about as a kid, but the badge boost in particular can have a major effect even if you aren't conscious of it happening.
The gen 1 games a very glitchy even by the standards of the time, even if the glitches you're likely to encounter during normal gameplay aren't game-breaking.

OK, how about the devs accidentally making psychic types flat-out immune to ghost type attacks, instead of weak to them? There was even an anime episode that revolved around Ash catching a Haunter to fight Sabrina because ghost-types are supposed to be good against psychic-types. I definitely remember watching the episode and being confused by that since I had seen psychic pokemon be unaffected by lick (a ghost move) while playing the game (plus all gen 1 ghosts are part poison so they get raped by psychic types).

Yeah, gen 9 was rushed as fuck and full of glitches, but at least most of them were just models glitching out and have largely been patched (fuck the raids having tons of slowdown and occasionally even crashing, though), instead of stuff like "oops, we accidentally made a move that boosts your crit rate halve it instead " and "and oops, we made a type immune to a type it should be weak against". That kind of things should've been caught during reviewing of the code, or during the playtest (did nobody during playtesting think to use a supposedly super effective ghost-type move against a Kadabra or something?).

The absolute zoom state, the games were coded in assembly language which is hard to read for humans and made coding process slow and painful, but effective since you could easily manage the memory which allowed to put games into small handheld device. Today people don't code in that and use high-level languages which are easier to read and use mechanism to make the whole process simpler. So you're comparing the company that just started (not a corporation with infinite resources then) to the current company that can do everything but does bare-minimum with many errors.
