PLA is a great game. You have a much more tactile relationship with the environment and tools you have, and the Pokemon physically existing in the overworld gives them a greater sense of place. Its genuinely a really comfy ass game.
Tonally, PLA feels a lot more in line with Pokemon's original vision. Pokemon are friends, but theyre also wild animals that pose a threat, and sometimes even beasts of burden. I wouldnt go as far to say that it's outwardly mature, but its not the same babby mode yokai watch ass shit that SM and SwSh shit out. I like that you can actually feel a sense of danger. Im glad we got a game to break up that descent into toddler territory.
The battle system seemed like a decent change of pace at first, but even in addition to being incompatible with a core element of Pokemon, it quickly proved to be just worse overall. It forced being reactive instead of ever having a chance of being proactive, robbed agency, caused frustration when you get helplessly multi-turned, and worst yet, was actively WORSE to do when catching Pokemon or fighting Nobles. Its way more efficient just to keep chucking shit than going ever going into battle.
Id like it if they could reconcile what made PLA great with SV, in one coherent package. I think theyve got a lot of potential with it.
