If you love the Pokémon RPG formula then even the worse games are "kind of fun". PLA has incredibly shallow game mechanics. They seriously excluded held items from PLA when nearly every Sandbox game has some sort of equipment system even something as basic as Zelda 1. It's not really a "big step up" if they didn't even bring back the whole roster.
