All the Pokemon games have pretty slow starts, but BW1 is easily the worst about it. The new mons are pretty evenly distributed throughout the region, which gives you something to look forward to on every route, but it also means you have a tiny selection to pick from at the beginning and their move pools are fucking awful until around level 20 or so. I like Gen 5, but it's damn near unbearable until around Route 4.

The fact that it’s normal type is why it’s better than the starters. STAB Tackle is broken in gen 5 because they decided to buff its power to 50 for some fucking reason.

It also gets take down at lv15 which means you effectively have a 130 bp move before you would even be able to get the middle stage of the shitty starters
