I think it just happened to make it easier to understand. Explosion isn't exactly useful. Choice Lickilicky even feels more like a shitpost strategy instead of something useful.

As far as i know its never stated that explosion halved the defense of the pokemon getting hit so its like the hyperbeam nerf in gen 2 but intentional? With gen 2 buffing the bp to 250, im glad it got nerfed otherwise things like choiced azelf would have been more of a menace.

people don't realize how strong gen 2-4 explosion was, or even self-destruct. pretty much every team needed either a ghost type or protect on a dedicated lead, which could be hard with pursuit for the ghosts and just playing around protect
even mons like electrode or gengar could do massive damage with it, let alone explosion on azelf/metagross or self-destruct snorlax/mewtwo. imagine offensive lead lando-t or scarf genesect with a 500 bp explosion as a last-ditch effort

I used to love just to use Explosion, but it was 0 strategy.
But I think the nerf was too much, now it's almost useless.

Imagine unnerfed booming in gen 8 with Zeraora’s Plasma Fists setting up Ion Deluge for STAB Transistor-boosted Explosions from Regieleki. Unless you lead double ground, you’re ass is cooked.

The reason is probably more akin to Explosion's power always being intended to be that great originally, it's just that representing it as a base power value was tricky due to programming limitations or something, as one byte's max value can be 256, and 250 still fits neatly within that. So they doubled its effective power beyond that by adding a defense-halving property. Then they eventually nerfed the move to the ground by removing it.

its a shame ion deluge got dexited, but also weird they kept it as the special effect of plasma fists. i guess it makes sense since its nice synergy with volt absorb

Explosion wasn't even great before they nerfed it.
As some anon said, Electrode needs an Electric type Special Explosion. "Overload" or something.

It's probably for the best even if it made Electrode even worse. I don't think VGC could cope if Gen 3 strats like Explosion Gengar were still around.

Think about it now though. How the meta has evolved... The "power creep"... Even though that's not really how power creep works... But things like free Hyper Beams (and its clones) and Explosion halving defense wouldn't be as much of an issue, if at all, today compared to back then.
Hell, there's more than 5 ghosts now alone.

They nerfed it from 500 damage because in gen 5 they made sturdy actually work, and too many sturdy pokemon would've been cancer with it and explosion.

Those moves used to halve damage because they were limited to 255 damage for a move, but wanted a move that could deal more damage.
Why they removed it? They probably thought it was too prevalent in pvp.
