Classic Pokemon is Gen 1-4 because they're set in Japan
Nu Pokemon are Gens not set in Japan

I would call them "new" with gen 3 and 4. Could argue for BW2 being more of a transition to "nu" with some concepts like reintroducing popular old mons and having a larger regional dex (IIRC they were the largest or 2nd at the time, with HGSS also technically having ~250)

Classic Pokémon is gens 1 and 2. 3 is like 50-50 for me but I think they are considered retro now so I can give it a pass. 4 is too modernized to be classic.

Anything after RG is nu-pokémon as everything since was made with the express aim of continuing the "fad", per Iwata, Ishihara and Masuda in the Iwata Asks about Pokémon interviews he'd conducted.

gen 5 is a lot closer to gen 6 than gen 4 in design philosophy. but BW are still fine games and BW2 are peak pokemon.

Shouldn't this include the other games so the contrast is more clearly visible? Because if DP or HGSS turn out to be like 25 minutes then what's the point?

it's kind of in-between if you ask me. It's clearly a departure from the static sprites and purely isometric overworlds and you can see they were going for innovation, but it's also not quite the purely 3D style X and Y introduced. I'd put 1-4 into classic and 6+ into nu, but for 5 there's no right answer.
