I was also born in 2003 but I’m an old soul, and relate much more to the classic games than the games that came out since I was born
For me the old games have this absolutely effortless class in them which modern games like gen 4 lack

I live in a post-soviet third world shithole and back in late 1990s and early 2000s when pokemania boom happened nobody here even knew what gameboy even is. But every kid, and I mean every fucking kid saw the original show. It was dubbed and translated daily on one of the russian channels. And people went really fucking crazy about it. Maybe a couple of educated kids knew about the Nintendo and the games, but most of us thought that the show was the only thing. Local stores catched up pretty quickly and started selling bootleg booster packs with cards (they also put some generic bubble gum inside them for some reason) and I was nagging my mom to by me some every time she went shopping for months. That batch had gen1 pokemons and I collected almost all 150 of them. There were a couple really rare motherfuckers I couldn't get.
And I didn't even know the rules for the tcg, nobody knew. We just brought duplicates to school and played against each other putting cards on top of each other and hitting it with the hand. The winner took those that flipped.
I learned about the games many years later and it was such a revelation to me. My whole fucking life changed that day.

Gonna be 28 in December. I feel really old and think back of the days of playing my older brothers red version and finishing my emerald version. Good times, weird but I get really teary eyed whenever I listen to the older game OST. Last Pokemania was 2016 Pokémon GO times

Wrong, Pokemania was definitely a thing in Europe. They banned Pokémon cards on schoolyards because kids were so fucking autistic about them that they started fights, stole other people's shit etc
We had tons of weird pokemon themed merchandise as well, I remember how my dad got me some weird, super elaborate jelly pops in the shape of the Johto starters.

Yeah pretty much. I'm 31 now and everyone below 25 is just a child to me. Old doesn't start until 60. 40 year olds are basically peers to me. Your definition of old and young changed a lot as you get older.

I'm from Mediterranean eastern part of Spain and here Pokemon was pretty big
All of my friends saw the anime and we also had a lot of bootleg mixed with some official cards, merch and everything
however, games and consoles did arrive here and even better, when 3rd gen arrived, they did the legendary events on beaches on summer where they give away the legendary pokes
Funny how I've seen Pokemon in my both languages at least up to advanced battle

I miss watching the anime on TV in the afternoon even if we had the same censored 4kid version. That was a peaceful moment of relax... If I close my eyes I can still feel the summer breeze coming from the window while hearing Ash and the others talking with some music in the background.
