Make sure you're buying this for yourself and not for him or for some interest of yours that you're placing on him. He's three. He's going to love a lot of things in his young life and things will come in and out of favor wildly quickly.
Not saying he won't like pokemon tomorrow, but it wouldn't be unheard of among kids. Also, he's 3 and has little concept of these things.
Ultimately, buy it for yourself and because it reminds you of yourself in your youth, and because it also reminds you of your son (along with the rarity of it). But get it for you, not for him. You can give it to him down the line, of course, but you get the gist of what I'm saying.
