Fearow, Dodrio, and Noctowl need evolutions. Bellsprout could finally use a secondary final stage to balance out Oddish.

Only objective reason is that it retcons eviolite for those pokemon that used to be fully evolved and were unaffected by it. I think there is no coincidence that Gen 5 which introduced eviolite also stopped giving new cross-gen evos.

Crossgen evos shouldn't be a concept easily retconned and thrown away, they should be permanent additions to their lines. Just like the Johto/Sinnoh additions are still with us to this day.

I still believe that megas were supposed to be a permanent addition to the franchise instead of the first of a series on generational gimmicks, but something happened during gen VI that caused Gamefreak to move in a different direction.

This thing is dogshit. Eviolite Rhydon has some applications, but it’s still lacking. Can’t complain too much when Rhyperior didn’t walk away with much of a stat buff.

Never hated it, myself. I’ve always found it to be a little boring. Tangela is so simple and appealing in the “RPG monster encounter” sense that I feel like there were ample opportunities to do more with that base design than make it bigger with a slightly uglier silhouette.

Rhyperior is not dogshit tho.
It's not Landorus-T or Great Tusk (Thanks Power Creep), but it's still good, like Metagross-Tier: Lacking things, but has it's uses.
Eviolite Rhydon is just Discount Rhyperior, mediocre at best.

I think the reality isn't that they had a big canceled plan, but that they had no plan at all. They threw megas into gen 6 with barely any goal other than to shill some old mons, realized they were hitting their limit with designs and the balancing was terrible, and decided to move on from that experiment to another starting with gen 7. Carrying over the few existing megas was testing whether multiple gimmicks at once would work or not, and they decided it didn't.

My bad for not being clearer. I think Rhyperior is a dogshit design. It looks like Rhydon hit middle age, got fat, and gave up on its dreams to become a construction / demolition worker. It’s like a bad joke. Completely fails to capture the appeal of either pre-evolution.
