What happened? Why did they suddenly decide to make her lose? Surely it can't be that hard to give her closure in these last few episodes. All that build up literally amounted to nothing.

She didn't lose, she got the kiss, that's as far as any pokegirl can and will go. Unless Misty kisses Ash Serena wins by default

In all likelihood Ash wanders into the sunset so Serena wins in theory

I don't agree with this. The kiss does not make her a winner because it was never made canon like promised. If anything I'm pissed off about the kiss because not only did it ban them from interacting again, it was something that laid the groundwork for a follow up. That never happened, it's totally shit writing and now it feels meaningless because it went nowhere. Hell it wasn't even fucking acknowledged a single time after and they even went extra steps by getting rid of the blue ribbon. I just want to know why.

Amour was always irrelevant. The kiss was just Yajima throwing bait to Serenafags, but they never cared to have Ash actually reciprocate even during XY, so why would anyone think they would follow up on it some 6 years later?

Now it's ending and we're getting gay filler with Shitsy and Brock who didn't need to come back but no conclusion for Serena which is complete bullshit when she didn't even get a whole episode to herself for her one and only return. It feels like the anime has been hijacked.

The series will end platonically with all the girls. Don't expect anything extreme, anyway Journeys didn't have the love element at all, no girls flirted with Ash. XY was an exception that had the "romance" element (less than twenty episodes), because the region was Kalos (France) for obvious reasons. It was also Ash's most serious season.

Yajima LITERALLY said word for word they would become a couple lmao. You're surprised people expected some kind of follow up to such a huge moment? Why did he bother saying that at all then, he said it after XY was done. So obviously it was supposed to carry forward through the series.

This. Brock is known for flirting with any pretty woman. Misty about her fear of insects, her love of water types, and her arrogance. For better or for worse, Serena is stuck as the girl who likes Ash, it's part of her character.

Exactly, so why the fuck did they decide to walk it back? I wasn't pissed off about her return until recently because I had faith they'd follow up their short reunion, it felt like they were building to it. But here we are and they're not. When I re-examine that episode, it seems like they went out of their way to fucking assassinate that part of her character if that's her real last appearance.

The writers were just trying to change things up by having the new female companion be more girly than ever and one of the aspects of being overly girl is having a crush on a boy. The only buildup there was is the kiss goodbye, which is what it is. A kiss goodbye, Ash goes to new region, new female companion(s), but no crushes this time to avoid shitshows and boom.
