The world we see is significantly scaled down. I.E. In-universe, it takes 30 minutes to walk from your house to the Petalburg Gym.

There's often a lot of missed opportunities with Gym leaders and Elite 4 members in general not having a larger role in the story, or even just existing in the world beyond standing in the room where you battle them.

If anything, it's a question of where the truck came from beyond that. If you just follow routes then the furthest you can get is Rustboro before you hit a cave or a shoreline.
ORAS just shows you on some otherwise unseen and inaccessible forest trail.

Why does everyone think this game is better than blue or crystal? I sort of get with gen 5 part i&2, and emerald is definitely still better than sun and moon or whatever, but it's nowhere near as complete and rich as gen 2 or as cozy and soulful as gen 1.

Just checked the measurements out of curiosity, in irl Kyushu that distance would be enough to move you around a city but not travel outside one. Which makes his family situation weirder given that he just moved to the region recently.

Also explains why towns can function without basic necessities like grocery stores, farms, hospitals, banks, etc... and why MOST trainers we see dont have houses to their names. The worlds are just far more scaled down and compact than they're actually meant to be.
