As the subject states: it's now 1997 again, what are you doing in the world involving Pokemon? Waiting for news on Gold and Silver? Still trying to catch Mewtwo? Just collecting cards/watching the anime? Enlighten /vp/.

Dragonite, and it still is. I remember how unstoppable Drake's seemed in the anime with it's endless movepool, and my brother had one in his game that blew me away with how powerful it seemed compared to other Pokemon.

Just wondering as I'm not a Dragonite fan myself but do you like the way it evolved from Dragonair or are you in the camp that would've preferred it to look closer to the first 2 evos?

I didn't really think about it too much, my child brain was just 'wow cool strong dragon'.

In later years, I've come to appreciate it's 'cute but strong' vibe. As for its departure from Dratini and Dragonair, it's a little weird, but doesn't bother me.

I heard it's based off a Korean legend about sea serpent dragons that live in underwater caves, and if they live for 1000 years, they catch a jewel from the sky and become a real dragon. Dragonair has what looks like jewels on its head and tail. And 1000 years could refer to how it evolves super late by gen 1 standards.

I'm barely turning 5. In a few months I'll get my first copy of Yellow and my teal colored GBC for my birthday. I remember seeing on display in hanging mini TV sets at Walmart showing an ad for GSC and it showed Silver "kicking Gold" away from Elm's Lab. Shit looked hilarious and awesome.

I got into Pokémon via the Trading Card Game, which, like the video games, was not out yet in North America in 1997. Chances are I hadn't heard of Pokémon.
