I'd argue Gen 2 was peak Pokemon.
Gen 4 was the decline because Wi-Fi battles basically ended the requirement to physically interact with other humans

Gen 4 is the worst Generation ever made, worse than Gen 8.
HGSS is not as good as GSC.
Colosseum is just okay, XD is way better.
Colosseum is not the hardest Pokemon game.
Gen 5 is nu-Pokemon and started the downfall even if it was decent.
PLA and SV are the only good 3D mainline games.
Mystery Dungeon is mediocre series.
Puzzle League and Snap are the best spin-off games.

Gen IV is a return to form and continued Gen II's spirit of doubling down and expanding upon on previous mechanics while focusing on "more, more, more". It did not need to make concessions like Gen III and be rushed out. The only people who hate it are ADHD kids who started with Hoenn and append it to Gen I and II like that's not the most retarded fucking thing in the world. Gen IV had to fix all the shit that Hoenn dropped.

Gen V has a better engine than IV but it very much is the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end as heavy-handed stories and simplistic region design began to really work their way in.
