Pixel Sprites Era AKA The SOUL of Pokémon

Kanto = Game Boy Color
Johto = Game Boy Advanced
Hoenn = Nintendo DS
Sinnoh = Nintendo DS "Advanced" ("3D"/2.5D was a mistake)

Pokemon Stadium 1 = Nintendo 64
Pokemon Stadium 2 = Nintendo GameCube

Pokemon Colosseum = Nintendo Wii

3D Models Era

Unova = Nintendo Switch

Pacifica (Aloha+) = Nintendo Switch

Europa (Kalos, Galar, Paldea) = Nintendo Switch "Advanced"

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this the other day. Pokemon RG took 6 years to make, they might take a while to release it on GBC.
But many programmers left GF during development, so I'm not sure the rest would stick around for another 2 years.

With the power and graphics of the Game Boy Color, Pokemon could have started with the day/night cycle, shiny Pokémon, berries, among other mechanics. Who knows what kind of mechanics we would have now.

The color only existed, as Pokémon revitalised GB sales to the point Nintendo saw it profitable to continue to produce the system. Without Pokémon's launch in '96, the color doesn't get made because there was no point to producing it otherwise.

Makes literally no sense. Colosseum was made exactly because the GameCube lacked third party support, especially in the wake of the PS golden age and the release of the XBOX.
Nintendo didn't have this issue with how extremely casual and popular the Wii was in contrast.

I highly doubt that. Most of those gen 2 innovations came because they already had a strong foundation layed down by the previous gen and could push the technology of how.many features a cartridge could hold. If they had debuted on the GBC instead, they wouldn't have the base and experience to experiment with more features when they had still to design everything from stratch.

I highly doubt they would have bothered with something like the day/night cycle if they didn't even know if their game was gonna succesful in the first place.

In fact, Masuda became a programmer because programmers left, he was just the music director before.

Gold & Silver where on standard GB cartridges, in other words, backwards compatible with a 1988 Game Boy. Aside from (obviously) the color graphics, and the IR connectivity, every technical feature of Gen 2 could have physically done on Gen 1. Look for something introduced with Crystal to argue that Pokémon needed the power of GBC.

Still wouldn't have had any bearing, because until Pokémon launched, Nintendo was thinking of moving on from it. But then it launched, got popular then all of a sudden, they started selling units of a dead system, because there was a must-play game that people would happily pay for a new system to play in limited colours (and of course, the kids would recognise the creatures from the tv show better).

True, does not change the fact that GF nearly broke and Masuda took the role of programmer since a few employees quit.
The code was already a mess, and if Masuda decided to leave too, maybe we wouldn't have pokemon.

However, Nintendo was developing something called "Project Atlantis" around the same time. It had specs more on par with the GBA than anything else, and given development rumors about it came out in mid-1996 then that would have been a few good years ahead of the curve. This would also mean that if Pokemon were delayed, it would either never release or would have been overshadowed by big games for this new system and probably would have never gained popularity in the same way. Pokemon could have released earlier and still been a success, but any later and that probably wouldn't have been the case.
