Croconaw and gets Ice Beam and Quilava gets flamethrower when you reach goldenrod and chikorita line eats shit for the first two gyms. It's not useless but it's undeniably the worst for peaking with razor leaf as STAB and being mono grass defensive.

Is that hgss? Because in crystal those moves were move tutor only (besides level up), and i believe that's only unlocked either after the goldenrod tower incident or after beating the e4. Goldenrod has ice punch (croconaw), thunder and fire punch (typhlosion) and the gamecorner tms (fireblast for quilava and typhlosion,blizzard for croconaw and feraligator). So quilava has it a rough midgame if you are not clever with the tm's.

Play the games. It’s literally a matter of 1 turn to make chikorita take less damage from gust and Fury cutter than both of the other starters.

While it’s admittedly wanting for stab later on, Body slam and razor leaf is plenty for the bulk of the game. Also grass just isn’t a bad defensive typing like you guys saying, it’s weaknesses either have very middling offensive moves or are super rare (or both for bug lol)

Johto fans told me using just the starter is what the level curve is designed for. At peast I assume that's what they meant, if a smaller team is better, the smallest team must be the best.

Took me longer, I was a firefag at first but as I got older I saw the true appeal of the grass type. One of the most unique types in the game, always love to use one. I literally cannot fucking play a kanto or sinnoh playthrough without using Venusaur and Torterra. I just can't. They're so awesome. Sceptile too but I like some of the other hoenn grass mons more so I pick it less

I've only enjoyed the Chikorita line on spin off pokemon games and 2 animated movies. I tried using one on crystal but I got bored and just went with Cyndaquil instead.

I recently replayed Silver with Chikorita. It handily soloed its way through the early game, Bayleef'd the fuck out of Falkner (only grinded the last half of level 15 to get there), needed some meat shields for Bugsy but still did the damage, and ultimately didn't get any new teammates until Togepi hatched and I traded for the Machop. It was Body Slamming its way through the rest of the game happily at that point, only problem was it didn't have much Grass power for the mid-to-late game until Giga Drain.

I chose Chikorita on my recent emulator rum of Crystal & I got through the game just fine. The people who say this just want to sweep everything with their starter.
Just for the record her was my team for the Elite 4:
Meganium lv50: Razor Leaf, Body Slam, Reflect Light Screen
Donphan lv50: Earthquake, Mud-Slap, Rollout, Strength
Arcanine lv50: Flamethrower, Dragonbreath, Bite, ExtremeSpeed
Granbull lv50: Return, Shadow Ball, Bite, Charm
Jynx lv50: Ice Punch, Psychic, Mean Look, Sweet Kiss
Lanturn lv50: Surf, Spark, Thunder Wave, Confuse Ray

People really underestimate the viability of shitmon in GSC, and the “muh movepool” gripes are usually from people who don’t understand the games. I could see complaints about moveset variety being low, but most mon have at least one solid moveset they can rock, especially if you’re only worried about clearing GSC in-game content.

This was the set I ran on the MVP Donphan in a recent Crystal run. Seems shit, but it just werks. One of my few genuine gripes with GSC is that you can’t reuse TMs without duping.
