Because the fap to them in the first place so there's a bit of denial behind the controversy of saying this on /vp/
On top of that the anime and in part even the games makes the situation more ambigous, never clarifing completely if Pokémon are just animals with super power that are easier to addomesticate. The cherry on top is the Mystery Dungeon series which confuse the minds of Pokémon fans even more despite its a separate spin-off with different rules where Pokémon have human intelligence
