>>53241445It's not that they don't translate well, they just did a shit job with a lot of them.
Look at
>>53241090. Obvious polygon count aside, it's MUCH closer than the current model to Alakazam's proper proportions. Really, Stadium proves that, for a ton of these Pokemon, their issues were in the model's execution, rather than just some inextricable quality of their design that just wouldnt work.
Even aside from just Stadium, we've had years of other 3D games, and even physical merch where the designs worked. To varying degrees, naturally, but a hand full of the current 3D models took some parts of the designs from official art way too literally without understanding the context of their dynamic poses.
Again, using Alakazam as an example, I can see how they interpreted it this way vs the Sugi art, but they did it poorly without understanding Alakazam as a whole. They way overemphasized the torso, didn't realize the Sugi art had his head held higher than it normally is, fucked up the length and size of its legs, didn't distinguish between leg and feet enough, has ever-so-slightly too broad of shoulders, and way too short arms... A lot of small things that are wrong that add up to it looking like shit. All of these issues are a direct result of the non-neutral pose the Sugi art is in. I think it's pretty obvious that they just used the single piece of art as reference, and not neutral reference sheets. This is all in addition to a pose thats just stiff as shit for no reason (cause newbie modelers or something idfk)
Anyway, point being is, any of these critiques aren't impossible to fix, so its not a matter of them not being ABLE to work in 3D.
