The problem with them is that you won't be able to transfer them over to the newer games. I've played roms before but have never finished one due to it not feeling like I actually own the game.

This. I always like to transfer my old Pokémon and teams to the new games for nostalgia and legacy purposes. If I have to say goodbye to them when I’m done with the game, there’s no point. Plus I already own all the old games, so it’s no problem for me.

This. Emulation is perfectly fine.
I can trade between every single gen. I can even emulate a GBA-GC link. Also you can transfer everything to newer gens as well using emulators up to Gen 5. Trading between games of the same Gen also works for Gens from 1 to 9, and you can use PkHex as Bank/Home to transfer up from Gen 6 and up.
