Single-minded determination can absolutely work, but not when it's the character's literal only trait. The moment where he comes face to face with the Liepard that used to be he Purrloin he'd been searching for all game and it doesn't even recognize him should've been an absolute slam dunk of an emotional impact but it comes off as a wet fart because Hugh barely even feels like an actual person and you're sick of his shit by the time it happens.
