The issue I took was with your explanation of why repros were being made. It's not because the OEM carts are old, it's because they are expensive, because demand for them, is still high. That's literally the reason repros exist - aside from duping grandmas into buying them as Christmas gifts. They're made to provide a cheaper alternative to an official product. The average end user doesn't even know RBY have a battery in them, they certainly don't know or give a fuck about their Sapphire flash RAM failing in 90 years.
