Until GF finally kicks their respective critical boost ability for *every* starter in *every* generation and just give them the HA they should have to begin with, starters are gonna keep feeling less relevant each game.

they’ve been following the “boyish/girly/cool” pattern since gen 6 (chesnaught/delphox/Greninja, incineroar/primarina/decidueye, rillaboom/Cinderace/inteleon, quaquaval/meowscarada/Skeledirge), pretty sure gen 4 has nothing to do with it. You could probably say Infernape contributed to them all being jobmons, though, since it and Empoleon are probably the first example among starters due to being directly based on characters instead of purely concepts (Sun Wukong and Napoleon respectively)

Empoleon is based on the idea of an "emperor penguin" that is literally an emperor. The name *is* a reference to EMPEROR Napoleon but the design itself has more direct references to tridents and icebreakers than him- the only thing that can be associated with Napoleon is that it kinda seems like the penguin wears a fancy coat or tie but that look isn't specific of Bonaparte.

Also, Infernape has more in common with Son Goku from Dragon Ball than the original Sun Wukong- the fact that you can't tell is enough proof that Infernape is nothing like a modern jobmon.

Galar did not od "boy, girly, cool". According to Ohmori in that one GameInformer interview, with Galar they tried to do something different and instead went with a trio that was a extrovert pokemon, an introvert pokemon and a balanced more mature one.
