Something about abilities? But using multiple abilities would be way too unfair and make some the most broken of all pokes ever. Same for carrying 2 items.

They have nowhere to go, either crazy broken shit or playing it safe and do another gen with megas.

Or will they come up with something random like switching a pokemon’s two stats (hp excluded)?

7th Pokemon that won't be fighting but will be always standing in the back of the battle and in addition yo your turn you would be allowed to use once each of its four moves that affect the field (Trick Room), your Pokemon (Helping Hand), opponent (String Shot) or something random like give you a free switch (Whirlwind) or item (Bestow).

'Ace' Pokemon

One Pokemon on your team is designated as your ace and receives some benefits.
-A slight boost in stats all stats, with Pokemon with high BST getting deminishing returns on their boosts.
-As well as certain passive protections such as lower chance of being effected by secondary effects and shorter duration of status afflictions.

Also, your entire team will gain a passive buff even when your ace is not on the field. The buff will depend on your ace's type. Dual types will have the two type-buffs but they will be weak versions.
Some Pokemon will have unique buff effects.

The buff will disappear if the ace Pokemon feints.

Tag teams, basically fusions without having to create new graphics
gets both mons abilities, average of both bsts +10 bonus in each stat, you can choose the 4 moves in the menu (based on the two mons you tag'd) and one tag team per team of 6
