More linear progression, Gyms having less Pokemon, Elite 4 you can challenge in any order (instead of the difficulty rising with each member), powerful Legendary being added to your party. Overall making the franchise accessible so newer kids don't get stuck.
XY differed though for changing Pokemon's battle system and graphics for the first time in several years, where BW appeared to be another DS game.
