The problem is if they do it again, they're trying to rehash blue or appeal to gen 1 nostalgia, and if they don't, they're acknowledging they can't top that, it's a hard to win game. The YGO anime has had a similar example with its rival chars since GX. Hard to do better than Kaiba when he's one of the purest expressions of the archetype, same goes for Blue. The anime arguably topped Gary with Paul, but if you believe they did, after that they defintiely had the problem of not being able to top Paul, cause Paul, like Blue and Kaiba worked by being one of the go-to examples of what a rival is supposed to be.
