Australia hints
>Hints of Spain (gen 9) have been from SM (gen 7).
>In SV it has a frame showing the Uluru rock, it is located in the desert of Australia
>In one of the gen 8 games it shows the map of Australia and Papua (New Guinea)
>In SwSh the Galarian Corsola evolves. The OG Corsola will probably get an evolution in Australia.

Gen 10 will be a return to Japan. I am 100% confident of this. They don't want to pass up that opportunity to do another crack at their home country. I wouldn't be shocked even if it's some sort of follow up to the original generations, like we go back to a new region that is somehow an update or connected to the originals from Japan.

They're not gonna risk getting the games banned there because of some minimal inconsequential detail that somehow offended pooh.

Chinese media restrictions aren't nearly as draconian as you're imagining. Literally dozens of majors video games come out every year featuring fantasy versions of China (which is what a Pokemon region would be) or just straight up real China and no one cares. Why would it be any more of a problem for Gamefreak?

Not really? Let’s look at them in selling order (of their base games)

1) R/G/B (Japan) - 31.05mill
2) SS (England) - 25.68
3) GS (Japan) - 23.73
4) SV (Spain) - 20.61
5) DP (Japan) - 17.67
6) XY (France) - 16.65
7) SM (USA) - 16.29
8) RS (Japan) - 16.22
9) BW (USA) - 15.64

The trend here is that sales went down Gen 1 > Gen 2 > Gen 3 as Pokemania was born and slowly faded, with Gen 4 picking numbers back up but nowhere near as a drastic raise as the drastic drop after Pokémania was fizzling. Gen 5 dropped back down to Gen 3 numbers, and Gens 6 and 7 were another slight raise but stayed a lot more consistent with eachother. Gens 8 and 9 have been explosive hitters likely due to a resurgence in Pokémon’s massive media presence and the success of the Switch meaning Nintendo gamers aren’t splitting resources between handheld gaming and home console gaming. SV will likely overtake GS and probably even SS, but that’s less because of it being based on Spain and more of the above + open world.

If anything the recurring trend here is that Pokemania happened, it died down, and the first base pair on a new console sells more than the Gen after. Sales grew but continued these trends as Pokémon’s media presence expanded in the 3D era before Gen 8 exploded due to being on a extremely popular home console and Gen 9 being set to overtake it due to the switch’s success and having the most drastic format change in the series (open world).

The main take away from this is that no, sales didn’t increase when they left Japan. The only Japanese game in the lower half (using DP as the median) is RS, which coincided with the end of Pokémania as the fad died off. And it still sold really well for video game standards.

The first three games out of Japan have good sales but still lower than Pokémania and the first DS games, with BW (first out of Japan) being the lowest seller in the series.

But at the same time, SV and SS sold extremely well and are still growing in sales (more so SV) and have nothing to do with Japan. What this shows is that the region’s basis honestly doesn’t really matter compared to other factors (release console, media presence, gameplay changes).

The story isn't so much the problem. They can use mythology from Oceania (which includes Australia) or more generally from around the world. In Kalos (France) they used Norse mythology. In Hoenn (Kyushu-Japan) Jewish mythology.

It already has history.

You already have countless nations of aboriginals across the country, along with the first 200 years of country being set up by the British colonists.

You can easily turn that into having Australia region having connections with Galar region, due to "colonialism " in the form of exploration. And putting some elements from other regions as well, which can come in the form of Pacific Islanders, Chinese and Indian. The Chinese would be more noteworthy considering the fact that there were lots of Chinese immigrants that came over to the Gold rushes of Australia.

Even then, the actual Pokemon games didn't really use all of the history of the real-life regions.
