also this is a spicy take but people jack off sugi way too much when he's not even the person who's done the majority of Pokemon's most iconic designs, that was a different lady who designed Pikachu, Eevee and I think even Zard.

And in regards to sugi's human designs I'd still say he's not the best at them, outside of some of his protagonists most of his character designs are often inferior to the redesigns the characters get from different artists, the best example being the entire hoenn cast between oras and the original rse.

I think this idea that Sugi is some kind of old wise master artist and designer that got worse over the years is an idea bolstered by being in love with nostalgia and not actually looking at what the artist has done from a fair viewpoint, what I'm really trying to say is Sugi was, is and always has been pretty mid tier and people just cream their jeans over the 26 year old watercolor art.

Really, it's just a consequence of anime art styles changing in general over time. Old Sugimori is pretty generic by the standards of the time period; people just like it so much now because it's drastically different from the current stuff. That being said, I will say I like how characters dress a lot more realistically in the older games, at least compared to the ridiculous designs they usually get now.
Anyway, I think they should've gone the Dragon Quest route and have someone impersonate his old art style for every game; it'd make Pokémon stand out a bit more
