It's unambitious. Z moves are the least flashy generational mechanic. It continued the direction from XY after three generations that didn't really resemble each other much. It was nested between two much worse generations so it didn't get the hate that 6 and 8 do. The Pokémon are also very middle of the pack without any of the controversial design directions that 5 and 9 have.

Gen 7 had a good story and good character and Pokemon designs that a lot of people wanna fuck.

It just forgot to have a good game with all of that. Then the Ultra games came in and slightly improved the gameplay but fucked up the story people liked in exchange. So yeah. Still better then 8 but that's not a high bar.

A-lot of people hyped themselves up for this one because it was an Anniversary game ("IT ALL COMES TOGETHER"). Only for it to just be fine. The story had a-lot of heart, with very unique conflict for Pokemon game. It was more about family and culture that saving the world from some big threat. Characters and script are pretty thoughtful, everyone has a "role" to play here or there.

But the gameplay however was not the most engaging. It's full of tutorials and invasive cutscenes which slow down the pacing of the game. There's alot of new gameplay gimmicks, but they've all been completely forgotten. Z-Moves has been overshadowed by the much more popular Mega Evolution. Battle Royal sounded cool, but there was no elimination mode so nobody played it. Festival Plaza, worse than the PSS. RotomDex sort of ruined Pokedex design going forward. It's all highly experimental stuff that didn't last too long.

The main issue i had with it was alot of unskippable cutscens every 2 minutes of gameplay or so. No gyms was also something different. Looking back however i did end up liking alot of the mons from that gen.

Regional forms were the best way to redo designs of older mons in a way that made sense within the franchise logic
Competitive wise the only downside is that the region form should have been hidden at Team Preview.

I like a lot about gen 7. I like the story and characters, and it was interesting to switch up the gym system a little.

Unfortunately the constant tutorials and cutscenes make it frustrating to play through, especially on repeat playthroughs. It also continued trends like exp share from gen 6.

USUM didn't help matters, making people play through the same game a year later, only gimping the payoffs of the original story to shoehorn in the admittedly enjoyable Rainbow Rocket.

I think a remake that removed all the annoying elements and combined both versions more smoothly could result in a great game, but after BDSP I do not trust modern remakes.
