Johto is about as big as original kanto with plenty of optional content.
Kanto just makes it a massive game that GF still hasn't replicated.

In the sense that you go there after the credits roll, I would say that it's post-game, but narratively GSC and HGSS don't feel complete in the slightest until you gain access to Mt. Silver and fight Red.

Going after Ho-oh and Lugia, and the Bug Catching Contest are the only worthwhile optional content in Johto, I'd say. Everything else is so meaningless it might as well be irrelevant. HGSS does add more stuff to do with the Pokethalon and the Safari Zone though.

What I was trying to get across is that gen 2's "Kanto" is not a real region, just a bonus area, not unlike the Sevii Islands in gen 3.

Yeah but I said worthwhile. Mt.Mortar and Unown Ruins are whatever, especially the latter. Mt. Mortar might get a pass. I think Dark Cave with the Lapras' is cool too. And I guess TECHNICALLY there's the GS Ball - Celebi Shrine thing.
