Is Gen 4 as good as Gen 5? Please leave other genwarring out of this, just asking to compare these two gens since they seem so similar.
Also not really talking HGSS.
Basically is Platinum as good as B2W2. I know they are both probably the two biggest improvements over their base games.

Gen 5 runs faster, and has a more structured story with characters getting involved in the game's conflict.

Gen 4 is slower, somewhat more player driven with less development on characters and more on lore/history.

Haven't played platinum in a while but B2W2 are great. I'd probably put platinum below thrm desu, but HGSS may well be comparable to B2W2.

Sinnoh looks more fun to explore than Unova but G5 has a slight edge on graphics. BW/2 have better legendaries, but DP has better starters. Galaxy and Plasma are both pretty entertaining.

“strictly linear” meaning tons of optional backtrack and sidetrack exploration instead of an arbitrary route to claim that gums order can be remixed, and the characters being the best in the series and actually not feeling like a cardboard cutout.

The backtracking is cool but just the layout of the routes/map in Unova is boring. The routes themselves are great. But there is a lot of direction-locking. I'd say the actual gyms are more fun in gen 5 than 4.

Unova never really clicked with me.
It feels more like a generic RPG and doesn't really have any of that classic Pokemon charm.

Huh that's an uncommon take i feel like.
To me unova is a crappy region with one of the worst dexes in the whole franchise.
However its way more fun and charming to play through than gens 3&4 i find. Graphically the last gen with soul for sure.

Gen 4 fucking shugs and is slow as fuck. Even Platinum is hurt by how terrible the performance is. Gen 5 is on the exact same system, and yet they managed to make it run way faster.

The Sinnoh games are garbage and it's a chore to slog through them. Platinum at its best is still not as good as Johto at its worst
