The chess motif was added in localization, the Japanese names make no reference to chess. And Bisharp didn't move like that, it was as speedy and nible as you'd expect.

How does Kingambit even use any moves other than Kowtow Kleave and Iron Head? Bisharp had those expandable blades on its hands, but Kingambit lacks those.

The anime is the only other reference for what a pokemon is, besides the games. The anime doesn't just create random stuff when it comes to the pokemon (for the most part), it strictly follows the reference material given by the designers. That's why canonical design elements like Golurk being able to fly and Garchomp being able to fly were first seen in the anime and only later represented in the games

The problem is that it just looks too much like Bisharp. The whole thought process behind most evolutions is they share elements with their previous forms, while be unmistakably distinguishable from them. The facial blades are THE most defining part about Kingambit and if you're gonna take them away, you'd need something else notable to compensate.

The hair chair doesn't even look bad in battle since the animation for performing moves like Kowtow Cleave with it jumping onto its knees to bow down and slash and then jumping back to sit on its hair looks smooth. The problem is the goofy overworld movement where it looks like it's riding on an invisible wheelchair being yanked around with a rope.
