are they good?

are they worth buying a gamecube for? (i'd also buy the gameboy player to play stuff like emerald, tcg, pinball, puzzle challenge, etc.)

If you like the actual Pokemon battles these are probably going to be among the best games for you, but they really don't have much else to them besides that
They're not worth buying (just because they're so expensive now) unless you just want to collect the hardware in which case the actual game isn't really the important part

If you specifically want to use the multiplayer features, then yeah buying a GameCube would be a good idea. If you just want to play the story mode, then you can play it on Wii or Wii U via USB Loader GX instead and save the money.

If you don't have a wii, you should pick one up at a thrift store or a flea market or facebook marketplace for 20 dollars. It takes 10 minutes to install the homebrew channel + nintendont for the gamecube games, the process is completely retard proof. I'm playing wind waker right now, will probably move onto colosseum or killer7 when I'm done

colosseum is a short game that starts at level 25 and ends at level 50ish, with maybe half as many battles as XD does (not necessarily a bad thing due to how long battles take), and with a bit higher difficulty and less fleshed out shadow pokemon/purification mechanics.

XD has a longer story which can get you turned around if you haven't played in a long time but made it far into the story, but the variety of pokemon is more than just 90% johtomons, and it gives you TMs once in a while to make your team have actual moves unlike in Colosseum. and it's not a big pain in the ass to purify 50 pokemon with the chamber and perfumes.

Get a Wii and a Gamcube link cable, it'll probably run you $50 altogether. Then just play them on Nintendont because the physical games are stupid expensive.

The problem with XD is that half of the Pokemon are in the latter quarter of the game, and all in one area.

Colosseum is incredibly tedious, and you will be relying on early route Gen 2 mons like Jumpluff, Ampharos, and Quagsire for most of the game since the options are so limited. It was cool 20 years ago, but I don't think I would want to go back and play it now. XD was a bit better, but I'm sure it would also play like shit by today's standards as well. The only reason to play these games today is if you want to do shiny/ribbon autism that barely matters anymore in Gen 9 due to the dexcut and other shit.

The scarcity of Pokemon, moves, and items combined with the comparatively high difficulty and double battles makes means all of my choices matter and I have to think about what I do, which isn't something I really ever get from any other Pokemon game.
There's nothing quite like spending all of my money and items on my only chance to catch a Stantler that only knows Take Down, and have it be like manna from heaven because it gets Intimidate and I can teach it Reflect + Light Screen

Colosseum has same issues evel scaling issues as every pokemon game but worse as the pokemon and tm selection is very limited. XD is a little better, it covers some of the flaws of Colosseum but it loses a lot of the charm the original had.

great point, though it also frontloads the beginning of the game with decent options. Breloom and Walrein are great throughout, and the teddiursa you get first is a little asskicker for the early game.

Colosseum is very fun game and a nice change of pace from the regular formula. The only down side is you're very restricted on the pokemon you can use.
