Is this the most forgotten pair in Gen 3?
Zangoose/Seviper is a cool rivalry
Plusle/Minun are pikaclones, and power each other up in Double Battles
Beautifly/Dustox is a split evolution
Gallade/Gardevoir is another in later gens
Or Glalie/Froslass
Huntail/Gorebyss

But these bugs I never see often

I remember then because I was stuck on the third gym and had to kill these to level up. Good times. The Pokémon are incredibly ugly and useless thiugh.

When I think of how Gen 3 has the weakest Pokemon, these are the first two that come to mind
They don't evolve and they're not Route 1 trashmons, you get them halfway through the game at a 1% encounter. They don't even have some unique gimmick like Shedinja or Castform or Spinda. Why are they so weak? Why are there two of them?

They can lay eggs that hatch into each other, which I guess is unique, but they don't evolve or anything and aren't related to each other otherwise. Where they supposed to be like psuedo-babies where you have to breed the one from the other version in order to get its dex entry? These two are just so bizarre

I'm using Volbeat's Illuminate to increase wild pokemon encounter rate in gen 3. It also has Tail Glow and Signal Beam even if it doesn't really benefit from them it's unique. Illumise... should have gotten something, anything.

I just recently remembered about Eccentric and Fluctuating experience groups being a thing, and thereby remembered Volbeat and Zangoose, and how they mog Illumise and Seviper by being the stronger ones of their pairs and not needing an extra million exp to do so
Also learned Fluctuating pokemon are still being made in Gen 9

Espeon, the Moon Pokemon was in SM, Volcarona the Sun Pokemon was in USUM. They also have Solgaleo and Lunala, the Suune and Moone Pokemon respectively. The Meteorite Pokemon, Lunatone and Solrock are not in the game, they should have been.

As it turns out, Game Freak have been coming up with pokemon to shill battle mechanics since way before gen 6. The "gimmick" this time around was double battles, so they made doubles of a lot of tropes:
>two early route mammals, Poochyena and Zigzagoon
>two early route birds, Wingull and Swellow
>regional bug split evolves into Dustox and Beautifly
>two pikaclones, Plusle and Minun
>two pseudo-legendaries, Salamence and Metagross
and even ignoring the usual tropes, there's a big emphasis on duos of similar counterparts that aren't version exclusives
>two water types that evolve into water/dark, Corphish and Carvanha
>two 2-stage ghost families, Duskull and Banette
>Clamperl has a split evolution in Huntail and Gorebyss
a lot of the pokemon this gen were intended to be counterparts, duos to push Doubles. Volbeat and Illumise serve that exact purpose
