We have numerous examples of ancient animals that LOOK like modern animals, only to find out that they are on complete opposite sides of the evolutionary tree and have very little in common. For example, cartilagenous fish (sharks) split away from bony fish (those with bones) over 420 million years ago. Yet if you put a barracuda next to a mako shark, people would think they're relatively closely related.
