I love Gen 2 but I would've made the Champion Lance's son, just to make it more interesting and surprising. Storming the team Rocket HQ with this kid who looks strangely familiar would've been a cool build up to meeting him as the Champion, and he could've had a more diverse team including Ampharos and Kingdra.
There could've been some deeper rooms in Dragon's Den or something where you could battle Lance in the post-game.
