I'd like to have a look at various sprites created for romhacks, is there any way to extract them? NSE doesn't always do the trick as far as I can tell, for Gen 3 ones. Alternatively, are there any approaches to cheating in items and the like to just see them ingame?
At least with essentials games you just need to navigate some folders.

The issue is a core, baked-in update is the Battle Engine overhauls built for almost any decomp, which includes updates to latest mechanics with no options to select how far you want to go with updates for modern games. So you wind up with games that always have:
>Fairy type
>Physical/Special Split
>Every fucking move even if it's name exceeds the character limit
>Every fucking Pokemon even if it's trash or ALSO has a name that exceeds the character limit
And many who pick up the expansions/overhauls will lack the ability to pare them back down to a coherent, clean vision of Pokedex, movepools, and battle mechanics. So you get a glut of these "kitchen sink" hacks that list the features of the overhauls as their hacks "features" even though no part of those features are unique to their hack, or any hack in the present day for that matter.
Uninspired and low effort because the community has allowed it to be so. Accessibility is a net positive, but lowering the barrier to entry without raising the barrier to publishing is a doomed prospect that floods the community with low-effort first attempts at hacking.

Why even bother talking about shit you're not familiar with? Although there aren't generation-specific toggles in emerald-expansion, you can still disable every single one of those battle mechanics tweaks introduced in later gens. This isn't different for pokemon, moves, abilities, items, etc...

If you want to know why every single hack is choke full of pokemon nowadays, I'll tell you: it's because the authors thought it was a good idea, and because the community pushes this kind of shit forward. This trend started way back when C injection started being explored, suddendly hacks like Theta Emerald EX exploded in popularity and everyone else followed it.

I'm telling you, these fucking idiots can barely get Git to pull. You think they're making changes in the environment, recommitting, then building? No. They're copying and pasting a few random detailed fixes from tutorial posts, barely getting past the compiler, and publishing. I agree some of the issue is that brainlets take "gotta catch em all" too literally and cram nearly a 1000 pokemon into a given region, but the tools given to them are the final enabler. If every dev had to hand-add 700+ pokemon and a shitload of move and battle engine updates on their own, 90% of uninventive shit hacks would disappear. It's convenience, plain and simple. And this was an issue / debate as early as the gen III days, where the great divide was regional dex / "386" / "493" etc designations for hacks. We don't use such nice shorthand anymore because it's just assumed you're running things like expansion. And don't get me started on CFRU, the only limits to the dex there are for KANTOOOO or "le Unova dex in Kanto" type garbage.

Clever reply anon. I asked my question to encourage discussion because this is a topic that I've never seen discussed at length here before. But I guess I made the mistake by not bringing forward some of my own ideas for a qol or vanilla+ hack for game:

Drayano generally has good ideas for vanilla/rebalance hacks, but generally he goes overboard (most notably in Renegade Platinum) with accessibility by giving the player too many options in Pokemon, EV training, TMs, etc that a lot of the fun of the game for a more casual player is taken away. Which does make sense, since his hacks require (you) to optimize your team almost as much as possible to prepare for the hard-as-balls battles, these hacks are for competitive minded youtubers autists and not anons who simply want something similar, but different. He is better than a lot of these failed hack creators in that he kind of does try to keep the "spirit" of the original games intact by not adding in Pokemon from future gens for example but his hacks has lead to a lot of derivatives with much, much less restraint.

For example, here is what I would do for the Johto games (this is admittedly more focused on the remakes than the originals): :

I have done most of the Pokémon changes, except I don’t know what to do with gen 9 mons because I don’t know how to change most of them. The region will be mostly open world with as little npc roadblocks as possible, but some natural roadblocks that need materials to cross. Also, no gym leaders, but we have commanders in their place.

I trained almost a completely new team for the biker gang on Three Island, and now I feel like I’m gonna have to do that for Berry Forest as well. Throughout the game I generally avoided looking ahead at trainer Pokemon, but this seems too ridiculous not to. Might try and get a Mega Gengar, if it’s as good as the base games, then it should do work.

The game isn’t nearly as big on story as say Gen 5, 7, or reborn and it’s clones. There will probably be like 3 cutscenes total which the first will be the organization hiring you explaining to you your mission, and dropping you out of their helicopter on to the enemy team’s island. I just wanted something unique and not the usual beat 8 gyms and the league to become champ. The game will have mons up to gen 9, and a special boss only Pokémon forms known as overdrives, which are gigabuffed versions of Pokémons (like megas but they are not in the game because meh.) You can access most of the game after the intro stage, but some places are blocked off by stuff that you need upgrades for. There will not be level scaling but there will be a catching level limit like SwSh with the in game explanation that the high levelled mons do not let their guard down. The game takes place exclusively on the enemy’s territory, so the only human non boss trainers will be grunts, but to mix it up there will be different ranks of grunts, divisions of grunts, and all sorts of designs for grunts, and also some totem Pokémon like fights. The boss fights are the stars of the show, as they have overdrives. Although obviously they don’t have anything too unfair like box legendaries or more than 1 or Verde I’ve until the endgame. The Pokémon are changed to the degree of radical red and inclement emerald. The difficulty will be around the difficulty of vintage white, which is significantly harder than drayano, but not as hard as emerald kaizo. The game will be made for hardcore nuzlocking in mind. EV’s, IV’s don’t exist, you will be able to heal, use the pc, change natures, abilities, moves, etc on the fly outside of dungeons.

Turns out I didn’t need to use a new team. I just had to play it super smart (and use a lot of save states). I don’t feel too bad about using them here, gauntlets like this are kind of nonsense.

DSPRE for most edits
PokEditor for some extra stuff that DSPRE can't do
PDSME for map edits
FL Studio for writing MIDIs
Nintendo's SSEQ tools for converting MIDIs to SSEQs
Nitro Studio 2 for inserting SSEQs
Tinke for extracting/inserting sprites/SDAT
Hex editor for... well... hex editing

That's most of what you need for simple Gen 4 hacking. I think there was some other tools for inserting loop markers into the MIDIs and another tool for editing the regional Dex to include Togekiss/Mamoswine/Tangrowth/etc. but all of that can easily be Google'd.

There is never a reason to not have Perfect IVs on your Pokemon.
Unless you want the lowest possible attack for non-attackers or lowest possible speed for your Trick Room abusers or some hyper specific ultra rare plan involving specific EV and IV numbers.
Just generate IVs perfect by default, add a NPC who can minimize ATK or SPEED or both when asked, and let that NPC set your EVs and IVs to specific numbers.

The EV is divided by 4 and rounded down to get the bonus the EV adds to your stats. So the max EV of 252 can only provide a boost of 63 maximum. DESU I wish that was 256 and 64 respectively, those are neater numbers.

I've been using https://github.com/Ajarmar/universal-pokemon-randomizer-zx/releases it's a randomizer, but it has a bunch of optional tweaks you can apply and you don't even have to randomize the game itself -- just patch the game with the tweaks that's it. And it's game specific shit (ie gen 4 games have faster HP scrolling, gen 5 has no low health music in battle, etc).

I don't really have a vision for it. I'm just adding shit to it as I go. It's basically just "HGSS but if I directed it", so no Gen 5+ Pokémon, no BST buffs, no Gen 5+ QOL or anything like that, the only thing I added from newer Gens was the Linking Cord from PLA because I want a way to actually use trade evolutions and that was the most canon implementation for it.

Radical Red has absolutely spoiled me with it's quality of life, but I just hate playing in Kanto and I like Drayano hacks more. I really hope his new version of HGSS implements some of the things from CFRU. Like being able to see pokemon typings (since Dray changes some pokemon types) and super effectiveness in battle. I hate having to have documentation open while playing and learning that this enemy's Charizard is now Fire/Dragon instead of Fire/Flying by picking a move I think will be super effective, but it isn't.

Even playing through Blaze Black 2 Redux, it feels outdated even though it came out after rad red. Fuck man.

Sounds like a good feature. Too many early games are either too easy to defeat because you can just roll 6 pokemon from the onset, or are too grindy because you're kinda expected to roll 6 pokemon from the start. Limiting it and raising the cap at set points allows for a smoother difficulty curve

And thats just IN THE GAMES. You could devise a number of alternative grind mechanics that aren't just "number get maxed out" to keep your player battling pokemon that aren't tied to trainers or specific story events.
If you have to add NPCs to adjust invisible numbers and change rolls on RNG, your game has been designed to be played exactly one way. It shows that many, many designers who can code are usually better at coding than designing. It's important for these people to be led by others who recognize "hey, that aspect should be optional as it shoehorns the players into a playstyle that can't be introduced organically in-game and relies on exterior documentation to not only understand, but even be aware that it's present".

So you collect all 252 EVs or however many there are, then you can just reassign them whenever you want from party menu.

Still working on it but allowing you to do some wild stuff like stacking a team with one species to max species mastery to open some new team comp ideas, or making mono-type challenges actually have a benefit to earn while imposing your challenge.
Am I dumb, or would this be better than EVs? It's a little more deliberate, but since EVs in many hacks are now a deliberate choice anyways I think it's inoffensive to make the system a little more intuitive and interactive.

The point of IVs was pretty obviously to give pokemon a bit of individuality instead of making every individual identical, the problem is that they clearly didn't consider the idea that players would want to minmax their pokemon for competitive battling, thus making 99% of the pokemon players catch objectively worse than a pokemon with good IVs
natures sell the concept a lot better, but even that comes with the issue of some pokemon benefiting far more than others.

Rework type mastery to something a little more tied to the world. As much as a single type is a theme many players gravitate towards, monotype challenges are the only place that system would really flourish. Otherwise you'd need to kneecap it to make it achievable in a single playthrough with only 1-2 mons of that type. Such a system would eliminate the monotype base you're trying to cater to, and nobody will really be happy with it. You want something that can be worked through as the highest "completion" level, and approaching it from a type standpoint will be lopsided (sure hope your players like water/flying/normal types, and don't mind having a very diminished pool for things like Steel and Dark). You need something your players can stop and stick around in during the story, or go back and revisit in the late/postgame - your other two systems are "gun and go" so something that promotes really soaking in the environment and engaging with it would be a great third pillar.

I have this idea in my head, and i don't even know if i can be made, or if its a good idea, making it about traning pokemon and earning money and fame, kind of like someone would training and managing a Boxer/MMA fighter and making it into the big leagues, making it like pokemon training was more of a profession instead of this whimsical teen journey everyone has

Here's the picture in my head: You start at the bottom, maybe not "illegal underground" bottom, but at the local tournament the town puts up at some holiday or whatever where you get the tutorial showing you the basics, Pokemon battles are basically the same except you can't gain Experience, EVs or Money just by fighting

The money earned after the fight depends on several factors, a "Hype" stat that can increase depending on "Fame" (of both participants), Fame (Increases mainly with victories) and other things like Trainer and Pokemon Outfits and how it synergizes with their "Disposition" or "Alignment" (kind of the same that Pokemon Contest have, something akin to Coolness, Beauty, Cuteness, Cleverness, or Toughness, but maybe add something else for balance), how much the event was adverticed, etc

"Fame" can be increased outside of fighting with quests like stoping some criminal activity or defeating some pokemon horde harrasing the city, basically anything that can show the press/internet you're competent fighter and people like you more, it can be more than just that. Fame would also open more content

"Disposition" is what stablishes your Brand so to speak and it has to do with "Sponsors", each alightment has diferent Sponsors that gives you diferent discounts, unique items and reward money depending on the tier (Like, Amateur tier could probably give you a small discount at some local stores and a shirt with their logo that increases income by a little and not much else), but if you deviate too much from it you could also lose that sponsor.

And this is where my second most "Controvertial" decision comes in, "Pokemon Alignment", every Pokemon will have up to 2 tags from the Pokemon Contest system (or something like that) and those tags would be the main source of "Disposition", when they win a public battle, depending on their level and items/clothes/whatever, the trainer will gain points towards those Pokemon's Alightment and maybe lose some depending on what alightment it is (caping at 0), for example, a Machamp would have a "Tough" tag and would gain points towards that naturally but lose some on the "Cute" Alightment since they would be in opposition, that's basically the gist of it but it might change, this would in theory limit your Pokemon pool since Sponsors would have their own Alightment ranges (For example, at least 100 Points in "Cool" and less than 20 in "Cute"), you could still shove a Pokemon that has nothing to do with your style but too many for a long time would just make you lose focus and lose you the good Sponsors

And now for my MOST Controvertial decision: Becouse of how the game works, it wouldn't be open world, or rather, it would be a waste of time to make the whole game an open world to explore

The way im thinking of it, it would be an overworld map with cities/towns highlighted and each one would have a map of their own indicating the various facilities you can enter plus the various catching fields, kind of like Pokemon Conquest but with more flare, no inbetween besides some special events, although it would be neat to have more NPCs react to you it feels like a waste of time, and the game would not be centered about exploration, so it feels a bit dumb to make a whole Region for this instead a few individual maps to roam about

For facilities you would have: Home, Store, Gymnasium (for training pokemon), Pokemon Center, Stadium/"Whatever place i deside the battles take place", Catching Zones and some extra specialty buildings depending on the city/town, like a Mine and Museum where you can mine for fossils and gems/other hold items

All of this would function in a calendar system where you can spend time to do an activity for a set period of time, the days would be separated between Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Night, from Monday to Sunday with Sunday reserved for a special battle event you have to prepare for

Home would encompass all the activities or game options that can't be lumped with the other places, like switching clothes and such, the Home activities will never pass time

Store will have a lot of changes, first, becouse of how the game is balanced, you can't sell anything at the store, TMs are now once use but in exchange (depending of the sponsor/fame/city/day of the month) can get access to "Rare TMs" with unusual moves, even things like "V-Create" can be found, the only requisite to learn would be the Pokemon has to share a type with the element of the TM, so ANY fire pokemon can lean "V-Create", but only fire Pokemon

Gymnasium is where you train Pokemon, but it doesn't work like in the games, Experience Points (and later on EVs and IVs) can only be earned by using "Supplements" of which they can only take up to 5 every training session, each Supplement also has a level cap where they're no longer effective and get diminishing returns the closer they are to it, they can also be multyplied using Training Items in the Gym or your own that you would have to buy, using the Gym facilities costs money but its not necessary for training, for example, a specific type of Berry Juice will give some Exp. So that's basically it for gameplay, its more or less half backed ideas but that's a game i would like to play, for story can be easily changed to whatever, its just a race to the top so the story is the most flexible part

Come to think of it, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: 7th Stand User did something interesting no other game has the balls to do. Two things.

One, events based on what Stand you have.
Helping shy lovers confess with Miracles, calming down a panicking cat with Miracles or catching it with Wildhearts, fixing someone's Walkman(TM) and Crashed Planes with Crazy Diamond, it really makes you feel like you're on an adventure with your Pokemon- I mean Stand.

And two...

There's a time management element involved in grinding. Doing too badly during battles, fighting too many foes (who are, of course, avoidable on the overworld map) can wear down your HP and PP and Recovery Item supply. You have to weigh the cost of resting in hotel rooms and inns for a night versus the cost of getting instantly healed in an expensive hospital.
You're on a mission with a time limit. You need to save someone's life and kill Dio.
You're not some child kicking everyone's ass in fantasy land.
This is a matter of life and death. Refusing the mission means death. Failing the mission means death.
Dio must die.
You must gain the power to kill Dio and Vins.
This presents an interesting dilemma.
How long do you spend exploring the world, grinding, defeating foes, enjoying this RPG vs completing this RPG?
Plus you have friends. Their opinion of you matters.
And you have multiple alternate endings.
And a debug room.

Fucking hell, this game is three decades ahead of anything the Pokemon fandom has ever even dreamed of.

This could also even allow for different paths in the story, like the order of the last 3 gyms depends on the starter because it allows you to access a city the others can't

Hacks such as Emerald Rogue does take advantage of having more mons, due to its roguelike nature.

Is there a pokemon emerald romhack that makes all Pokemon obtainable (preferably saved until endgame and not infesting early routes), makes trade evos evolve in a different way and NOTHING else, some seem to try to change up trainer battles, or replace all the sprites with DS sprites that look out of place. The decomps avoid that issue entirely. Binary hacking meant you were changing things at memory addresses, using our best guesses as to where you could put something and how big it could be. It was easy to overwrite the address in a way that corrupted something down the line, hence why tools were used to find free space and you had to use a lot of GUI-driven tools to get consistent results without corrupting your entire project.
The decomps allow you to modify the game's source code, and you compile the ROM live each time. This means memory constraints have mostly been lifted, as the compiler handles all that heavy lifting. You can do just about anything you want, and the code is heavily documented and reshaped to be transparent and more in line with modem day industry practices. As the other anon said - once you get the GitHub workspace set up, and overcome the initial learning curve of "where is the code for X?", The game breaks wide open and you can do some wild shit. I heavily, heavily suggest you try it out as your hack idea is very base level and could be perfect to show you the modern tools and capabilities for a hack.

I'll give it a look, I think my only other concern with romhacking is how to debug/test. Like if you change something way at the end of the game and want to see if it works, you obviously dont want to play the whole game again and even walk through walls cheats, etc. There may be a lot of flags that would be set through normal progression that need to be set manually somehow.

Debug menus are commonplace, as those other two said. Usually devs will include menus in battles to live edit the encounter, or warps at the start to jump to points in the game. I promise you, this is a VERY different ballgame than binary, I've been in the scene since 08 and things have gotten really, really promising. I'm hoping we keep getting mediocre modern pokemon releases so people keep getting driven to this community, I really want to see the support and population for online battling and trade for hacks, and there's already work being done on such things.
All that bring said, I'd love to see your distribution tables and Pokedex details when you get your hack underway. I've been underwhelmed by every 386 hack thus far due to their obsession with leaving everything vanilla BUT distributions, which just makes the game more of a slog to find the pokemon you DO want to use. Hence why you see 700 new features like PokeRadar to work around the bloated encounter tables rather than addressing key issues in Hoenn.
If you post back while working, you'll have me watching with interest for sure, I love this style of work.

I'm fairly certain a number of people would be more than happy to lend theirs, in my experience anything that isn't front-visible or resource-intensive code is usually something others will gladly help a newbie get, so long as they ask correctly.
In this guy's case, I don't believe he needs a debug. 90% of his work can be done in porymap just modifying encounter tables, and you'll never need debug there as the changes are UI-guided and carry near-zero odds of something going awry.
I just answered because he asked.
Also, I did mention some methods that aren't resource intensive - just add a warp to the truck that leads to a warp hub map, boom he can get to any place in Hoenn in less time than it would take to fly.

The point of hacks like that are to create a "definitive version" of the game, the problem is that in many cases what the creator thinks that means tends to result in a game that loses all the personality and feeling of the original.
Often the "quality of life" stuff can really fuck over the game feel too, what counts as "QoL" is, in fact, subjective. After all, being able to walk through walls or auto win a battle you're stuck on could count as "quality of life" improvements, even if the end result is that you've completely removed the game (a game is just a series of artificial inconveniences for the player after all). It's for this reason that I think simply stacking a bunch of quality of life features onto a game can quickly rob it of it's soul.
Also these Vanilla+ games tend to not integrate additional content in a seamless way, the result is that the new content is very clearly tacked on or gets in the way of the original game instead.
People who seek out vanilla romhacks WANT to play the original game, at least in my opinion.

no, if you're just doing wild/trainer/pokemon base data/mart/etc. edits it's just data entry. my nan could do it.

if you're making actual edits to the game's code and engine then there's obviously more knowledge involved, but you could easily make a fully fledged rom hack in a custom region with new characters/story etc. without touching the code.

I can say from toying around with it recently that decomps are a breeze to work with. Porymap does a lot of what advancemap did. Coding mainly comes into play if you're trying to do anything fancy like adding events, but even adding new maps isn't too tricky.

I've noticed in the Hall of Fame files for Emerald, there's a function called:

QOL features don't make the game easier, they make the game less irritating to play.

Like disabling random encounters unless an unused button is held.
It makes getting through shit maps full of lv8 zubats as a lv40 trainer easier to get through.

Nah. Having to reapply repel every so often is less convenient on the player for obvious reasons. Lacking a "Repel ran out. Reapply it?" is also less convenient for obvious reasons.
It's a shame elitists think enjoying QOL features makes you "less hardcore" but I guess they need to feel like SOMETHING separates them from those playing these games for fun instead of the sense of relief when you don't have to endure annoying BS any more.

Bad games have no idea how to make 400+ unique pokemon obtainable in the wild in a fun interesting way, as most maps were designed for 100ish Pokemon, not all 1000+ pokemon.
But for reasons any adult can explain to you, that doesn't inherently make any modernization or QOL features bad.
You hate the implementation, trust me. Not the features themselves. If you really do hate the features themselves, the vanilla unmodified roms are always there for you.

Grown-ups never have difficulty getting through Pokemon unless your IQ's below 90. But most grown-ups have jobs and lives to get back to, so we can't be arsed to spend all day grinding imaginary RPG numbers for dopamine hits, soft-resetting or sitting through dull text boxes and steamrolling piss-easy trainers and wading through waist-high sewage- I mean snow/marsh tiles.

Well, a big example is easy EVs / IVs, while personally I dont think any in-game challenges should require this, and battle tower / frontier stuff should probably stick them around the 10-20 range for fairness. Nature changes and the like to, the modern games do this and it makes it extremely easy to get powerful pokemon, its way more convenient yes, breeding is boring, but I have absolutely no attachment to the pokemon I "train" this way because there was really no investment.

For wild encounters, I 100% believe they were important to adding some sense of ""danger"" to dungeons, or at least a healthy sense of tedium to make them feel like proper adventures. (an adventure with only good parts is not a good adventure), but I will say that the "Repel ran out, re-apply it?" feature is an example of GOOD QoL, it saves time without actually changing the way a player approaches a situation. The player still does the exact same thing they would have done otherwise, it just saves a bit of menu usage. The ONLY problem with that system is that it makes max repels completely useless due to their inefficient price to steps ratio.

I guess that's the defining element here, I don't like it when QoL removes something from the actual game experience, even if its an overall negative experience, I think that negative experience creates a long term sense of accomplishment or attachment. Good QoL doesn't change the experience, just lets you do it in less button presses, etc.

I'll use another example from the mainline games: The ability to enter that quick select / move mode in boxes, where you just click on the pokemon and instantly move it instead of having to select the pokemon, press move, and then move it, is good QoL, same goes for mass select, move items, etc.
Bad QoL with boxes is letting the player access them from anywhere, as this changes what the player actually does. Pokemon centers no longer become hubs of your gameplay for example.

Come the fuck on already. I'm bored to tears with nothing to play. Kaizo shit is too mind numbing, same with rad red, unbound feels limiting compared to other hacks that use CFRU (which is ironic considering unbound dev created cfru), and nothing else has come out in years. Dray hacks hit that level of comfy where the game is challenging, but not ball busting, and the quality of life is nice, but not so much like radred where people don't even play the game anymore they just boss rush with the rare candy and care package cheats.

I need his new hack to be out already.

I don't mind them existing as the base games are so easy you can beat them with all the worst IVs and no EVs with your hands tied behind your back and blindfolded only going off of sound cues. But romhacks need to find a way to do something with them, because romhacks tend to make the games harder. Even the "easy modes" of a romhack are much harder than the vanilla games. Some even going so far as to require good IVs and good EVs, for every battle. That's what I hate the most. It's why I will never play unbound, because the trainers use good IVs and perfect EV spreads. So that means every single time I catch a new pokemon I have to turn off xp share and then go grind 2 hours on 1 specific pokemon to raise my EVs and do that again for my next set of EVs. Then for the next boss fight, I need to go reset them for my entire team and do it all again. That feels awful. So much time is wasted and padded out just grinding useless shit and constantly retraining my team and new pokemon. It killed my enjoyment of radical red for instance.

And sure, they add "QoL" where I can go fight a specific trainer for EVs or use the held items to speed it up, but why should I have to do that? If you are going to make the game hard enough that I have constantly change my EV spreads and max out my IVs through money grinds, then why not just make a menu where you can use a slider to change your pokemon's EVs like on Smogon? Let me go train my pokemon like a normal human being with random battles, and then once the pokemon has maxed it's EVs let me open up my menu and then minmax them for a fight. That way, not all the grinding is removed, since you still have to train your pokemon the correct way, but you also don't have to speed train your pokemon by eliminating the pikachu population of Viridian forest every time you catch a new one.

I do think that the EV-reducing berries are way too rare, especially in newer games without any berry farming. I think the nicest solution would have been a "lock" system, where you can "turn off" EV-gain in unwanted stats, maybe this is handled through the mark system or something that feels simple enough and fittingly obtuse for how these mechanics are handled.
IV's are a tough one because I really like the idea of them and like that you can have "thoroughbred" Pokemon, as much as it kinda irks me the "solution" here, to the problem of "my bro has bad genes", might just have been to set IV's to 31 if the IV is above 0 when playing online.
Of course all of this doesn't really have much to do with romhacking and good vs bad QoL is always a divisive topic so I worry about derailing the thread.

Speedup is one of those features thats really hard to ignore if its there, its like the console in elder scrolls games, if you're a little frustrated just jump into the console and tgm or tcl your way out of a situation.
The games have a natural pacing and a level of anticipation or tension that comes with it when you do your attacks or receive and attack. Needing to speed up really just feels like someone either doesnt enjoy the game and is playing out of obligation. What's the rush to beat it? You'll be right there again looking for more games to play instead. I've long since run out of games to play.
I personally have a full time job, it honestly wastes FAR less time of your day than school ever did, as there's no homework or anything like that. It's just 8 hours and you're done, instead of 6 hours + 2-6 hours of homework. So I never get this weird thing adults always tried to push on me that I'd suddenly have no time to do anything when I grew up. I have more time than ever. I can game from 5pm -> 1am, get 8 hours of sleep, and work all in a day. But this is ignoring the fact that games like this are meant for car rides, bus rides, etc. which are dead time anyway, and the longer and more tedious the portable game, the better in these scenarios.

I know pokemon can waste a lot of your time with tutorials and introductions and all that, but your romhack should be trying to avoid that stuff in the first place, since it doesnt need to make concessions for new players like the mainline games do.

I'm not saying its an AMAZING feature that should be in every romhack, but I genuinely see the appeal, its similar to why I play romhacks on 3DS where I dont really have access to speed up and save states and the like, it just feels like a more satisfying play experience.

RR feels best if you play with loose nuzlocke rules. They give you way too much choice in that game, so limiting your pokemon pool to "first I encounter on a route" feels a lot better than just constantly catching and training all new mon.

Yeah, problem is most of them don't. Especially the ones that try to prevent you from speeding up.
Like, cutscenes are something I'll always speed up because I've seen them a million times before. And it's not like mainline pokemon games have writing that would make me consider watching them for the 60th time like PMD does, so taking away speedup just cuts time out of my life.

Even if you're trying to pass time, you should try to spend that time on something worthwhile. We are mortal after all, and all that downtime could have been spent reading a good book or playing a good game.

Because as soon as speedup is a thing, I constantly want to use it, but once I'm using it I am less fulfilled.

I don't know what the answer is. I just know everytime I play a romhack now when I'm not speeding up I feel like a fucking dumbass, but when I am speeding up I'm having no fun and I just go play another game.

Still learning the in's and out's of this GBA decomp romhacking stuff. I'm very new to this.
I've noticed a lot of stuff references "gText_XXXXXXX" (X being whatever the text is for) for what text to actually put in that place. I've found a lot of these strings in files in the data/text folder and I see a decent amount of stuff in here, but maybe I'm just blind but I can't find anything referenced in the scripts im looking at that reference gText_XXXXX, for example, the PC in the player's home references stuff like "gText_TakeOutItemsFromPC", and I don't have any idea where something like this would be stored. Wondering if there's some other location that stores a bunch of stuff like this.

So ends my first day of learning how this rom hacking stuff works. A little scuffed but it was mostly a test.
Basically added an option in the player's home PC to change the time on the clock, its scuffed because despite being a male character, during the clock setting menu its using the female clock but I'm happy with this for now as a learning experience.
Haven't really done something like this before and I am sure there are better solutions to this that have been done in other rom hacks. But I got to learn how to edit menus, text, call events, etc. So it feels like a pretty productive use of time to me. Even if the end result could use a lot of work.
