I dunno, after Hugh I wasn't expecting much good, and XY proved me correct in that area. I did not quite expect them to be so awful and pointless though, at least Hugh had a motivation that sort of tied in to what was happening in the game.

Because they're different contexts? N was meant to be philosophically opposed to the world, and the XY group is just a friendly neighborhood committee who wanted to help you out.

Also Masuda has stated that he doesn't like making the edgy rivals archetype anymore.

I hate when people trash this group as if most of them weren't fun characters.
Shauna is a fun and bubbly
Tierno has style and dances
Serena/cailam are grate rivals and have a decent team to boot
I think Trevor is the one holding this team back. Sycamore could've easily told us to complete the dex without adding a sideman to it

The thing is... only Serena/Calem are actual rivals?
Trio of kids literally DENIED in Mega Tower or whatever that they care about fight or competing with you and the actual rival. They fucked out to do their side activities like "collecting memories", being a nerd or obsessing over dancing and Pokemon moves.
And Calem/Serena are serviceable rival? Definitively better than whatever the fuck was in Hoenn, for example. Brendan/May RETIRED in mid game and Wally barely existed as character.

Trevor's backstory should be push more to front instead of being tucked into one random house in largest city in game.
Give Shauna one two more scenes showing her experience in puzzles, maybe at the end of story put her into Luminose gym because apparently she's friend with Clemonth and loli so becoming gym designer for them would be kinda cool?
Kick Tierno hard enough that he will fly to Alola because his entire personality is made for that region. It's a travesty that easily excitable kiddo with obsession about dancing and Pokemon moves is not in region where dancing and Pokemon moves are big element.

The friends in SV mean so much more to me because we build our relationships first and then actually do something meaningful together.

I liked Trevors gimmick of being a "Dex Rival" since the Dex was getting increasingly downplayed as the gens gone on so it was nice to get a bone thrown as someone who actually cares about filling it out while playing, i think the main issue is that Shauna,Tierno and Trevor could easily been combined into one character and all be improved with it as a "Not-Love Interest" liking puzzles, competing with your Dex and having a dance-based team team.
