I was hoping to see old threads tied up, so the directionless nature of MPM has honestly been a little bit of a letdown for me. After the Yuyama interview, it's seems that there's not really any sort of grand plan here - just some fun vignettes with old Pokemon/the OG trio leading into an answer the question about the meaning of "Pokemon Master." I could wind up being wrong - maybe they go big on resolving things in episode 11. But if not, that's okay too - was still nice to take a trip down memory lane.

I'm seeing two sorts of camps regarding shipping and I feel like pointing it out so I'm gonna.
There's like SHIPPER SHIPPERS and there's people who ship Ash and Misty.
I don't have the words to explain it because english isn't my first language so sorry if this sucks but to some people Ash and Misty are the same as superman and lois. Nobody "Ships" Superman with Lois they just are the inevitable ship in their story. In smallvill when superman is bickering with lois the audience knows it is just setup for them getting together.
Then there's the other side which is SHIPPERS who are a bit more assertive about it and are consciously aware of shipping and whether or not its ambiguous

I could honestly live with them ending Team Rocket's run with a gag like this if it was actually worked. Certainly would fit with the characters. The joke just didn't land here, at least IMO. That being said, this seems like when Brian "died" in Family Guy. I'd be shocked if they're not coming back in at least one of the next two episodes.

No he definitely knows what's happening in MPM10 now, it's just that regardless of what he claims, he doesn't see episodes more than a week in advanced. He's never demonstrated proof that he knows anything beyond that, in fact he's been wrong about episodes farther than a week out many times before.

MPM10 and the PV for MPM11, that's all he's seen right now. Him claiming otherwise is just him lying.

I've been watching the Pokemon anime since 2006 and grew up watching OS and AG. There's no way Ash and Misty are getting together, at least not onscreen, but I definitely understand why people got into it. OS was very different from later series, it was an example of early-installment weirdness. 4Kids upping up the shipping also affected things.

Realistically millions of people probably saw that episode and only hundreds ended up learning that was a dub only line. An even smaller number would have known it was a joke about wording. This is kinda how shipping spreads

Should clarify that I agree by the way. I see it as practically impossible at this point. I'd even go as far as to say it's a wasteful endeavor that wasted its window of opportunity.
We like to pin shipping on cringy self insert nerds but I think it is true that a compelling romance story COULD have been told about Ash and Misty once long ago, but it's too late now. I think some boomer who thinks Misty never got her bike back is well within reason to expect it while a hardcore fan isn't.

Any boomer deeply invested in ash and misty already saw Misty confess in the pokemon live concert. They have absolutely no reason to give a shit that it was non canon. If Misty and Ash have a romantic hint of any kind by default it will be less overt than what westerners already saw.

Shipping is a fruitless endeavor. Japan and America's different standards for romance basically eliminated any possible payoff pokeshipping could have. It simply won't work unless you age them up.

I won't lie, I was probably one of those people. Back then I did think Ash and Misty could have gotten together, and I didn't know that it was 4Kids that upped the ante. Had I known about what 4Kids did I probably would have come to the realization that they'd never get together sooner.

It's really sad actually. There are people in their 30s and 40s right now who actually still think that Ash and Misty will still end up together, when if that was going to happen, they would have done that at the end of OS and/or have built it up throughout MPM, instead of it being mostly limited to MPM02 and the rest just being the usual OS dynamic stuff.

I think it's fair to say that it faded from relevance, as anything will do when not addressed for two decades. But I also understand why folks have dived back into that shit. The character was brought back for the final arc, and reintroduced with an episode that was basically a 20-minute shiptease.

The thing about MPM is that it was clearly meant to be a nostalgia trip, rather than a way to get Ash and Misty closer together. You can even tell with all the callbacks such as Misty pulling Brock's ear, Croagunk stabbing Brock, and all those other things. I really don't think that Misty and Ash ending up together was the intention here, because if it was, there'd be more episodes about it and every episode would have buildup towards it, instead of this whole Latias thing building up to MPM10.

-Simple start, we introduce the trio living "as the wind takes them", and follow Team Rocket's Delibird to catch up with Team Rocket.
-Delibird delivers them a meal, a message from Giovanni and their old Pokemon. In my mind, I actually believe this means Team Rocket has been officially fired from the organization. It's tradition in Japan to have a final meal with a co-worker who is leaving (called a Soubetsukai) and I think that was the meaning of the meal. The message from Giovanni tells Team Rocket to "Take charge of managing these Pokemon" which Team Rocket has likely mistaken as Giovanni entrusting them with more responsibility, but I believe this will later be confirmed to mean "beat it and don't come back".
-In case it isn't clear, I firmly believe this isn't the last we'll see of Team Rocket. I think the show is being intentionally vague as to the context of the firing because they want to pick up with Team Rocket later in the next two episodes. If I'm correct, Giovanni's unceremonious farewell is extra harsh, because they live for his approval.
-We get a nice montage of the "Graduated Pokemon" that couldn't make it to the episode. Guess that's the best we're getting for those who have moved on. I think this veneration of "graduated Pokemon" is an indication that Team Rocket's final resolution in a further episode will also be one of "graduation".
-Despite the ending, you get the feeling that Team Rocket really do love their Pokemon, which is nice.
-Anyway, nice and simple. James hatches a plan that involves all of the Pokemon, with Mime Jr. playing the lead role (getting extra love in the episode).

I actually remember seeing that "you and I might get married someday" video on YouTube (I don't recall actually watching that exact episode) and I didn't even know it was a dub change until I saw the comments. In hindsight, it makes a lot of sense why moments like that made Western viewers shippers, or why it seems that Western viewers seem to think Pokeshipping is more likely to be canon than Japanese viewers.

Come to think of it, I think many of the early shipping hints, or stuff like Ash liking Giselle, could be chalked up more to early-installment weirdness than anything. After all, they didn't even expect the anime to last more than a year initially. They though Ash would only be around for one year, not 26.

-The plan is smart because it specifically targets Ash's weak spot, his desire to help Pokemon. It's not uncommon to see Pikachu portrayed as the most perceptive of the group, it takes a lot to convince him that BS isn't afoot.
-Mild Rocketshipping pandering during the motto as Jessie and James are more touchy feely than usual, nothing that I think they'll seriously follow up on, but it did happen.
-Because it was in the context of an act, Team Rocket was permitted to act extra threatening this episode, appearing to really want to harm Mime Jr. playing up the most evil side of Ash's perception of them.
-You know it's a good plan when Team Rocket factors in being blasted off as part of the strategy.
-Unexpected Brock/Misty/Croagunk gag as he tries to use Mime Jr.'s charm to get in a good word with Officer Jenny (must've looked pretty funny without subs).
-To distract his share of Team Rocket's Pokemon, Brock busts out some moves from the ED Takeshi's Paradise (while the song plays softly in the background) probably because of the synergy with Ludicolo.
-As small as it is, it should be noted that when Brock offered to hold down the fort, Ash said "Got it!" immediately, but when Misty offered to hold down the fort, Ash took a moment to worry about her "Kasumi..." before agreeing.
-Bit of a stretch to assume that Ash would tell Pikachu to go on without him (and Team Rocket will count on it), but ignorable I guess.
-Unfortunately for Team Rocket, their solid plan falls apart because Latias decides to intervene, giving a mental projection to Ash about the situation Pikachu is under (similar to her powers in Heroes).
-Because they didn't want any of Ash's Pokemon to job, an innocent wild Slakoth was used as the endangered innocent of the climax. A safe/smart play. Ash gets to be the hero while his Pokemon retain their dignity.
-Add another exclamation of concern over Ash for Misty... I swear, they use her every time lol.

-Latias swoops in and saves Ash... It's a nice moment when he recognizes who she is before she even reveals herself, but this retroactively makes the stupidest moment of the season (when she saved him in Episode 6 and nobody cared) even more stupid now that we have everyone reacting appropriately to the Deus Ex Machina.

-I 1000% believe this is not the actual end of Team Rocket, but rather a low-point for the group that will be picked up in the next two episodes. My money is on the next episode. This episode is actually a stealth first-parter to Episode 10 in my eyes, given Latias setting up the Latios in trouble. Team Rocket will likely play a part in that situation. (If they're going for any sort of redemption arc, this would be the place, and even if they don't, a new villain is where they could make their triumphant return.)
-Their strategy for the last leg of the series seems clear. Episode 10 will be a movie-plot style quick and dirty action climax, complete with a movie style-villain and a grand resolution to Latias. Episode 11 will be an epilogue where the final dramatic question of what it means to be a Pokemon Master is articulated by Ash, and we say our goodbyes to the Ashime.

Honestly? Kind of a weak episode, and I'm really sad to say so. Unfortunately, because it had to function as a lead in to Episode 10, Team Rocket's big moment to shine was squandered in service of that, there simply wasn't enough room to do both. My hope is that Team Rocket's inevitable (to me) return somewhere in the last two episodes provides the closure they deserve.

Last minute predictions:
Ash and Misty? Unlikely, but possible
Latias? Will not be caught. At best hope for a Heroes reference.
Team Rocket? Fired and either redeemed or going their own way.
What is a Pokemon Master? Understanding the hearts of Pokemon.
WILD guess? The Pokemon tears scene from The First Movie may be referenced, if petrified Latias is any indication.

We're actually in the endgame now. Fingers crossed that the weakening of this episode to devote weight to Episode 10 really pays off.

It’s not that I don’t trust Gryphon. It’s that I don’t trust most modern media (from Japan or elsewhere) when it comes to doing satisfactory endings for stories. I feel this is accentuated for Ash & Pikachu because there are so many story threads that they never wrapped-up or came back to, so I feel everyone is going to be disappointed in some way, shape or form once the final episode drops.

You can do romance in kids anime. It's a core element of shows like Cardcaptor Sakura. But that's with characters with emotional depth, which Ash has never had much of - particularly post Orange Islands.

I think the chances of Ash and Misty ending up together have been virtually zero ever since OS ended. If Ash was going to end up with Misty (or anyone for that matter), it should have been way sooner, like back then. That ship has long sailed and romance has never been central to Ash's character. The earlier shippers realize this, the more they can leave the bargaining stage and enter acceptance.

Funny you mention that. Right when Latias reveals herself to the gang, a short melody plays and it is a rendition of a song from Heroes. The original melody plays when Ash enters into the secret garden for the first time.

Maybe I'm misremembering Naruto and glorifying it with bits and pieces of Nostalgia, but weren't battles in Naruto mostly about the nuances of each Shinobi's power and how they play against eachother, rather than the generic power beam contests that XY was all about?
I remember every bad guy in Naruto being defeated by some clever ruse or intelligent combo. Like when Naruto and the gang were caught in that spider dude's webs, the way they got out of it alive wasn't by Naruto suddenly firing a laser beam out of his mouth, but because the Naruto in the web was a shadow clone while the real one was elsewhere plotting his team's escape.
You just don't get shit like that in XY, Yajima somehow missed the point entirely.

I can't believe they're going to have the audacity to end the show this way. I would have honestly preferred if the show ended right after Ash won the Masters 8. Maybe have an episode or two of summary at the end, Ash saying his goodbyes to all his friends, then set off on a new journey with a timeskip at the end showing him as an old man standing on a frozen mountain as a Pokémon Master.

Instead, we got 11 episodes of some random filler plot. It's like they did this on purpose as a big middle finger to fans of the show.

Ash and Misty won't end up together, because nobody that watches the show actually thinks about them pairing. The viewer self inserts with Misty as their crush. There's too much ground & friendship to cover in the final episodes to bother with a forced love-story at the final stretch. It'll end with them relaxing together, Brock cooking and all the Pokemon running around. Ash will say something sweet, and it'll fade to black with heartwarming music.

Actually, it's a little different because Trixiefags and Tootiefags are both OGs and have equal "original girl" claim, so it gets even more heated. Timmy loves Trixie day 1 so his side of the ship is sealed, and Tootie loves Timmy day one so her side of the ship is sealed... both have hints for the other side (Trixie's is more blatant but memory wipe no jutsu) BUT Tootie has outside material like the live action movies to build her case.

That's Latias. We even got a subtle confirmation last year via a JP exclusive Alto Mare Latias (25th Anniversary Film Fest) giveaway that knows Sweet Kiss. Latias cannot normally learn that move.

If the rumors are true and M05 Latias does appear in some form in MPM, that pretty much brings that movie outside of the 'isolated universe' state that it currently is in.

The inhouse episodes (2, 4, 6, 8, and soon to be 11) look really good. You can really tell that the restructuring they’ve been doing for PM2023 is helping Team Kato a lot. Their schedule must be a lot better. I have high hopes for the next series. The outsourced episodes look about the same as usual though.

Brock hasn't made it off of the sidelines this entire season. Spontaneously breaking out into Takeshi's Paradise in episode 9 is probably the most interesting thing he's done in the entirety of MPM so far.

Misty's at least had a good return episode, and was actually important to the story in eps 7 and 8.

Brock is fairing a bit better than Misty IMO. Misty didn't really have any role in the Banette episode or the Pikachu/Meowth one. I notice in each ep the writers give Misty one small scene (helping to fish out Walimer, trying to put out the fire in Squirtle's ep with her Pokemon, or the Staryu/Psyduck scene in today's ep), but that's about it. She gets one small scene per ep but then for the rest of it she's just kinda there.

In a vacuum, yeah. But it's also within the context of episode 2, plus all of the mirror image shots that have occurred during MPM (which is not something I recall really being a thing in OS). They're definitely teasing the ship, but hard to say if there will be any payoff at the end.
