This is unironically the most humiliating defeat. Ash lost to a trainer with 5 pokemon, two steel and water types, and a unevolved pokemon that evolved mid-battle. This dude wasn't even the winner of the league anyway. It was the ranger with the Eevee evolution team. He wasn't even skilled, either. And Ash just fucking lost to him, after beating Trip no less.

He thought the Unova league was in Johto so he showed up late and with 7 badges. Ash had to correct him and told him to get 8 so that Marlon could show up in the anime. He also had to help him register for the league and slept in past the registration date. He only brought 5 pokemon to his match because he didn’t know that trainers could use six pokemon. He won because his riolu evolved into a lucario and swept Ashes remaining pokemon. He then lost to a guy with an eeveelution team who went to win the league. The Unova league was won by someone who didn’t use a single Gen 5 pokemon despite Unova’s original gimmick being a region with 150 new pokemon with no new pokemon until postgame.

It's about quality over quantity.

Brandon had a strong team of Hydreigon, Samurott, Ferrothorn and Lucario (Swanna's meh) while Ash had unevolved or low-tier garbage like Boldor, Pignite, Oshawott, Snivy and Unfezant (Pikachu's a toss-up).

Ash has tons of reserves to draw on yet he continues to persist with his new mons. He'll never win a tournament like this.

Naw Hoenn league was great. Tyson and Morrison's friendship with Ash made the whole tournament super compelling. Plus it had THREE whole battles instead of just 2. Kanto had fucking zero.
