Considering that even in XY, the flying Pokemon already had standing animations where used for Pokemon-Amie, I think Sky Battles were made because of the in-battle flying animations, not the other way around.

animations as such had existed as early as Stadium
Charizard has it's wings animated in sky battles for shit's sake
some pokemon, mostly NFEs didn't even get flying animations in spite of the sky battle mechanic
only a handful of mons like Tropius and Skarmory were effected negatively by it
you're making it out to be a much bigger problem than it actually is

Try again, look at the face. Mewtwo got a similar treatment. Mewtwo and Charizard both got their models altered (mostly their faces) to match their modern anime appearances.

What you're all seething about isn't so much 2D vs 3D than creativity. Those sprites have effort and creativity behind them; they had to draw him in a pose in each game, etc.

Whereas the equivalent would be modelling several different, unique, interesting animations for the Charizard model and giving it a cool texture.

They don't know how to make 2D games either. They accidentally stumbled onto a worldwide success with gen 1, put effort into gen 2 but only lucked out with gen 3. The 3D gens are all bad except for Gen 4 which had mote influence from prior gens than anything after.
