Except it is, zoomie.
Especially two first generations were directly inspired in gameplay and aesthetics by Dragon Quest. It's a jrpg with collectible twist.

it's pretty lazy, people shit on gen 5 for basically being alt versions of gen 1 pokémon but I honestly think foongus/amoonguss are a more interesting take on the "pokéball mimic" concept
